For example if I have a laptop that I can't sign into when I boot it up because the user hasn't given me the password, I take the HD out of the laptop. I have purchased a NexStar hard drive dock. Put the disk into the dock and it appears as just another HD on my system under Windows Explorer.
I use the "Recover my Files" program as per the attached picture. I don't have anything to do with this company or program, but I have found this program has far better results than anything else I have tried.
I start the app up, select recover lost files and tick the boxes to make sure the program searches for all formats that come out of cameras. You will understand exactly what you have to tick once you fire up the application.
