I'm not sure what the other guys use, to actually restore the missing data. But, for a quick preview to see if it's even worth the time, there's an add-on for Firefox called, simply enough, Exif Viewer. Once you install that, you can just right-click on a photo, and choose View Exif Image Data. A new window pops up, and you can scroll down to see if there's anything there. Helpful hint: sometimes, the thumbnail won't show anything, but if you open up the actual picture and try it there, you find some win.

(Since this add-on is on your computer, and doesn't share any data, it's also a great way to confirm that any cropping you've done to your own photos is secure)
