Pretty darn dismal, ouch!
Okay, so it helps to "know" the people at the table if you are that close

As for the under the table shots, I've got a Canon IXUS 9515 which slips into the palm of the hand. Keep it in one hand the same as a magician holds his cards without being seen, open your knees, slip both hands between them and lean forward so your chest touches the edge of the table. Manipulate the camera for a few seconds then straighten up. Practice makes perfect but my trouble is my wife is nearly always beside me so I've really had to master the art.
