I've used it when I don't want my message to be in the thread or on a member's public profile. For example, there was a member whose posts I enjoy, who hadn't posted in a while. I sent a private message encouraging him to post again. If I had put it in an old thread, he might not have seen it, and if I put it on his profile, anyone could see it. (He has started posting again
