The BBC has come under fire for broadcasting a version of 'The Merchant Of Venice' containing nudity before the watershed.
The 2004 Hollywood version of Shakespeare's play, starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, features repeated scenes of topless women and one of a man groping a woman in a brothel.
Yet despite this, the film was shown at 1.45pm on BBC Two on Saturday afternoon.
One viewer took to the BBC message board, saying: “Personally I have no problem with it but I’m mildly amused at seeing bare knockers not just once but six or seven times on BBC2 at 2pm on a Saturday.”
A spokesperson for Mediawatch UK said: “It is incumbent on broadcasters to check what the content is. This should not have been shown at this time of day.”
The BBC has so far received four official complaints over the broadcast but has maintained that the film was
'acceptable for a daytime audience'.
A victory for common sense?
