You do have a few other options. You could enter the monthly contest over at Voyeurweb and hope you win. They've really had some poor contributions recently. But, karennudist over there was complaining about not winning when he thought he should have (as did I), so it may not be a fair contest. You could also try to sell some of your pics to one of the various video sites out there. But, we here would never get to see them.

I don't think anyone would invest 4 years and hundreds of hours of their time devising a scam to get a camera. A scammer would aim a little higher.

Some of those HD video cameras produce fantastic quality pictures from the still frames. A still frame from a HD video may not be as good as a single picture from an HD camera, but let's face it, a lot of cameras produce grainy pictures when taken at the highest resolution. Some of the pics are so grainy I shrink them down to get rid of the graininess. Bigger is not always better.
I took a look at some of itsmee's HD frame captures from his video and they look pretty good. Some of the images are a little "washed out", but that could be from being compressed to jpeg, or some other camera compression setting. In my opinion, video that you can get good pictures from is better than higher quality pictures with no video. You can't watch the boobs and butts jiggling on the beach in a still photo. But you will do what you think is best and what your camera is able to handle. Here's a gallery of stills from itsmee's videos. I think you will have to download them to get the full size, which is huge.
