It is good to read you have possibly found a suitable and affordable camera.
As you say with the risks of loss and damage it is not worth buying anything too expensive either new or from eBay etc.
Indeed cameras with internal optical zooms are few and far between. The Ricoh RDC7 and RR1 were good in that respect plus looked different from a standard digital camera.
