Do you think your wife actually rang the home phone of her friend at @ 3am, hoping the cop would pick up and not his wife - or son? If your wife did not do that, then what's up with the son calling you at 3:45am? Actually, even if your wife woke the entire family, why do you think the son called you at that hour?
I'm thinking that if the son was motivated to call at that hour, this was possibly not the first disruption by your wife, and he wanted to stop the tension developing in his household. The cop was obviously a philanderer with questionable ethics (hence the firing) and his wife and son were both aware of a string of women - your wife being just one - and were tiring of the impact within the home.
