I usually use a Panasonic long zoom bridge camera for shooting this kind of pictures. It's nice, because the zoom mechanism is completely internal, so you can not say if I'm taking panorama or tele shots. So if someone asks me about what I'm photograping, I can say that I'm just taking a nice panorama of the marketplace or so. It does have a whopping 420mm (35mm equivalent) zoom, so that really makes nice closeups, and it has a optical image stabilizer, so I can shoot without any support. Only thing that bothers me is high noise in pictures, and it can not be corrected much without losing a quite bit of detail.
