Pam as told me about her early days at her first airline. Prior to starting she had to attend a flight training school to do her Certificate of Competence for Air Cabin Crew. They refer to it as the certificate of air frame readiness as a joke.
One of the training/assessment days is in the pool. Pam not being a good swimmer for weeks had been going to the local baths. The first task is to swim without stopping 10 lengths of the pool. I think it was a 25m pool. Pam manages this coming last. But at least there is no time limit on it. next after a rest she does a 20 minute treading water. next the brick dive like when she had to retrain for long haul. Then they went to lunch.
After lunch they had to dress in full outdoor clothes no swimwear underneath. They had to jump in the pool and swim to a life raft and help each other in. Pam says this was the equivalent of swimming 20 length in swim wear. Once in the raft the training crew tell them to strip off to their swim wear to swim back to the side. They protest that they where told not to wear swim wear. Well they all strip to underwear. The male and female instructors getting a eyeful of young males and females in very wet translucent underwear.
Her first week on flights she is told about the little initiations. Eventually he is persuaded one late flight to do it. Nervously she serves the flight deck in just her apron.
Birthdays where often celebrated. The girls coming off the worse. The normal penalties for flying on your birthday was a good flash of leg to the male crew. On her 21st birthday the request was a flash of flesh. Pam flashed her abdomen. Well this was a cheeky cop out. So on the late return flight the purser did something to the controls of the cabin which meant that the passengers in the rear could be moved forward for more comfort. This meant they could curtain off the planes rear. Pam was sent for something and the other girls followed her. They stripped her down, right down and took her underwear. They left her uniform.
Once Pam had dressed the pilot called for a coffee. Tray in hands Pam couldn't protect herself from the purser who yanked up her skirt to flash the bush.
On another occasion Pam was with a group of relatively new girls. Pam had been showing them some drill. The captain of the outbound flight had called over to the stand-by because one of the girls wasn't feeling to well and had to be replaced. Pam wasn't schedule to fly but was cleared to go. Once on board and off the ground Pam realised she'd not got her passport. This was in the days of much more control. When they landed Pam had to remain on board whilst the crew went off. Pam was left with ground crew. The crew chief asked why she didn't get off and Pam explained. Not technically even being there without a passport was a problem. But the crew chief said that he could get her in to the stand-by and out without a problem. The price was a bit of leg and a kiss. She joined the crew in the stand-by the captain miffed that she did what she'd done. The crew chief came at departure time and sneaked her back on board. Another flash required and a kiss.
The captain once the plane was in the air on over international air space called Pam to the cabin. Flying without a passport was a disciplinary offence. So to was flying without any clothes on in the cockpit jump seat but it was the lesser of two evils.
The only other story I can remember from this time was that when she got the long haul job they arranged a good bye party. The inward flight that night was extremely busy with families returning from holiday. Some Pam wasn't really in party mood. The girls give her her presents and so do the male crews. They then strip her naked and carry her out into the night. They dump her into the local pound or beck or lake.
