opanda to get the thumb and photoshop to do your scaling making etc etc.
You only take as much as needed from the thumb. eg the girl with the burt out eyes, sitting on the floor legs open, she had the eyes for me. I took them opened them up (expanded) then and them droppped them into the larger picture doing a bit of sharpening too.
That way you keep much of the quality of the large picture. Using opanda alone and expanding you would just get blurred parts that are already revealed.
with photoshop I have also found that sometimes (and only sometimes) by playing with the variations you can expose something that is blanked off.
its not magic and wont do everything and you also need to have some patience and be prepared that not all can be fixed
