I wonder if this varies based on gender. For instance, a good story, especially one that connects with me on an emotional level gets me more invested & immersed, then makes the sexual elements that much better for me.

LOL. I understand this viewpoint too. In such circumstances I prefer the story to present those elements as "fantasy erotica".
It's just something about the author telling me "this really happened!" and then being bombarded by highly-unlikely circumstances.... I'd rather they say "I REALLY wish THIS would happen" then I'm perfectly cool with it.
