Download smugmug
I don't remember getting the spacer.gif image file from smugmug... maybe flickr, or fotki?
Most smugmug users will let you right-click and Save Image As... from the (O)riginal size.
I use FireFox that lets me go to Tools > Page Info > Media > Save As... any image that is viewable and in my internet cache if the smugmug user has disabled right-click. It can't download streaming (flash) images.
FireFox's Page Info works great for almost all the image sites and is not in IE or Chrome.
