I would be happy to contribute towards the camera. Being a DSLR user, I do not know much about compact cameras. However, one piece of advise, get the largest sensor you can. Not mega pixels, but physical size. The larger photo receptors will allow you to recover greater detail from the shadows (bending over for example!) in high contrast scenarios like on the beach.
