discussion: alternative to Rapidshare for posting vids

MSN Hotmail, which is now called Widows Live, allows you to store 25 GB online or free (they're marketing it as replacing the need for an external hard drive or flash drive). They call it Skydrive -- as long as you have a Hotmail (or Windows Live) account, you have a Skydrive account.

You can designated individual folders as "public" so that other people can see and download their contents.

I was thinking that from now on if I have a water marked vid, I could post it in a public folder on Skydrive. That way anyone can download it and they don't have to pay for a Rapidshare account or wait 3 hours to download the second part. The upload limit for files is 50 MB, so splitting a vid might occassionally be necessary, but that's no big deal.

I'm reluctant to give out my real Hotmail address because I don't want to be spammed and because my real name is associated with it. But the beauty of Hotmail / Windows Live is that it's absolutely free and anonymous, so I'll just set up a second account with a fake name, like John Smith.

Heck, I could even post my entire collection in one public folder so people can grad whatever they want, not just watermarked vids.

Anyone think that's a good idea? Anyone else want to try as well? I'm interested in people's thoughts.

Awesome idea! I hate rapidshare. Thanks in advance.

Your Skydrive would be certan to make a few eyebrows twitch with the amount of downloads, and when they find out your hosting adult material, your account woulf more than likely be blocked.

I think the chances of them blocking via IP address are extremely low, on the other hand the chances of them deleting the account and all the data it contains are quite high.

I've been looking for off site storage for some data of mine. Thanks for the tip!

As far as file hosting sites go, Megaupload is my favorite. I know Rapidshare is the most popular and certainly so with paid users. But Rapidshare tinkers with their download speed for free users all the time. Nothing sucks more than waiting 35 minutes to download a 100 MB file when you used to be able to do it in 13 minutes or so.

Files could be put into RAR archives with changed file names and password protection. Nobody at Skydrive would know what the files contain. The large number of downloads is another issue entirely.

If you use JDownloader all downloads gets handled automatically, both free and pay users. I have a RS account so I haven't used it much, but when I tried the free download I didn't have any wait time and well even if there was wait time it doesn't matter much, the program does the waiting.

The program works with many download sites beside RS.

I use it as a paying user of RS. You just copy the links into it, and forget the download for 10-30 minutes, without the need to click through each of the links to download them. It will also un-rar/un-zip the files (as well as combining *.001 files)

You can also just have a list of downloads to complete, then leave the PC on, and come back to a load of new downloads having completed.

I think it is a must for anyone that uses RS to download, and like you said, many, many other sites too.
