Around the world in her underwear. Does anyone remember this?
 

Back in the mid to late 1980's, there was an expedition to the south pole. One of the expedition members was a woman (the first woman to ski to the pole, if I'm not mistaken), and she announced that she was going to "walk around the world in her underwear". When the team reached the pole marker, she stripped to her bra and panties, and circled the post (essentially, walking "around" the world). There were newspaper articles (I used to have one), that showed a series of four or five photos. She was wearing boots, a fur hat, and sexy black bra, and panties. The article was aptly titled; BBBBRA and Panties. The woman was an attractive, well toned blonde, in her 30s. Her name was Shirley Metz. The photos had a genuine EUF quality, as she was doing the classic "cover up" pose, laughing, and obviously very cold. In those days, seeing a woman publicly show her underwear, was a pretty rare occurance (of course, the location couldn't have been more remote). Does anyone else remember this, or even better, does anyone have the photos?

Yes, I definitely remember this. Life Magazine (I believe April 1989) had a picture of her standing her in her underwear at the Pole, smiling and looking cold. As I recall, she was cute in a Arctic explorer kind of way.

Glad to hear that someone else remembers this. Does anyone have that April, 1989 issue of Life magazine? Sure would love to see those photos, again.

Cool. That should be one of the photos, but she was wearing underwear, not a swim suit (black lace underwear, to be precise). In fact, the article went into great detail about how she had to have her underwear air dropped in, because once she took them off, they froze solid. A titiliating bit of antarctic trivia-LOL. I don't suppose anyone has this copy of Life magazine, laying about?

I believe some of the mainstream media had to say that she was in her "bathing suit" because they didn't want to say they were showing a woman in her underwear.

Remember, this was before the internet became popular. A lot has changed since then.

Could be. On the other hand, ratings and readership are ALWAYS the main goal for media organizations. If you have photos of a sexy arctic explorer in her underwear, you're going to advertise it that way (the article I had was titled BBBBrrr-bra and panties, not BBBBrrr-swimsuit-LOL). Probably just an error by the person cataloging that webpage. I'm really hoping that someone has this magazine laying around in their garage, or attic. Anyone?

300 club
 

Along the Antarctica theme, apparently the folks who spend the winter there join what is called the 300 club, which involves running nude around the pole. There are plenty of pics of naked men joining the club, but I've found only women in towels. There are plenty of folks here who are much better at diggin this stuff than me, so here's a challenge for you.

Someone MUST have the April, 1989 issue of Life magazine, laying around. Anybody?
