I am so sick of this

Can anyone please point me to a place to enable my windows media player to have the correct codecs installed on it? I am so sick and tired of not being able to play certain avi's, and I know there has to be a way to do it. I run ME and my system, although a few years old, is not crappy. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I assume you arleady have the DivX codec?

hockeypuck posted this advice in another thread:

hey this goes for everyone that has codec problems:
simply download the player called videolan (www.videolan.org)
it comes with pretty much every codec imaginable
i have never had any problems playing any type of video or audio clip!
I haven't download it, but maybe it will help you.

Good luck,

Thanks Alex, I'll give it a try.

Well, I downloaded it, and I know I'll sound like an idiot, but I can't figure out how to make it my default player. Any ideas?

info on media player

as long as you have the corrct codecs installed, the player you wish to use, SHOULD be able to find the codec.
heres how to make windows media player, you default player.

1, open up media player ( just open any media player video, and then stop the clip)
2, click tools and then click options.
3,on tabs at the top, click file types.
4,then click select all.
5,then click apply.

thats should do the trick.
hope this helps you out.

If you still have problem's, theres a tool you can use for finding out what codec you need to view a video clip. It will give you all the info you need, for codec's, and also direct you to a page, where you can download the particular codec needed. If you need this program, i'll try and find a link.

Thanks Peeper, i appreciate it. I must not have the proper codecs installed. When I downloaded the player that Alex showed me, it acted like a different player all together, which is why I thought I needed to make it the default. WMP is my default, and I have downloaded codecs for it before. Maybe I should just start from scratch or something. If you find that link please post it, because i figure I'm just going to download all that I can regarding this situation. Thanks again for your help.

Peeper, I really appreciate your help. I made the download from the link you gave, installed it, then tried playing an avi I knew wouldn't work. The program you gave me showed what I needed and I clicked on the "web" tab, which took me to a codec download site. I typed in, Divx x5 in the search box but came up with nothing. I know there is something I'm not doing right and it probably isn't that difficult. Should I just download a bunch of codecs from that site? And one more thing. When you download codecs like that, do they automatically install on your WMP? Again, I apprecaite all of your help.

my reply

Do you have the divx player installed?
if you don't, then go here http://www.divx.com/divx/ and download the free version, which is the 3rd one down.
The avi codec tool i told you about, should have taken you to the download page for the codec needed, once you clicked on the web tab.
Try that divx player, and then go to your media player, and set your media player as your default user ( same procedure as i told you on ealier thread)
If your still having problem's, let me know what codec your needing from that avi codec tool, and i'll see what else i can do. Failing that, you could post a video that you can't play, into the testing forum on here https://forum.oneclickchicks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13 and i'll download the clip, to see what codec it uses ok.
One day, we'll get your problem solved.

Well, Son of a b*tch! I figured it out Peeper. I can not tell you how much I appreciate that. It isn't so much that I'm such a horn dog that I want to see every damn movie on the net. It's that I've been dealing with this crap for so long. You know, downloading a clip only to find out that, yet again, you can't see the damn thing. Anyway, many thank you's to you and Alex.
