General board suggestion

Would it be possible to include a way to hide the posts content until users have replied?

I know that this may go down well with alot of users, but for a contributor to post an article and then have it viewed 1500+ times with only 1 or 2 replies annoys the hell out of the contibutor.
If the ability to hide things until a reply was received was installed then it would be upto the contributor if he used it or not.

What's the general thoughts on this??

i believe it would lead to pages and pages of "thx" or "okay" in a thread. i've seen this happen on a lot of boards. i personally feel that "hide" mode is a tool of the devil (lol). there is no way to make a meaningful reply to a post until you have seen it so the rest is nonsense. it's like trying to say "thanks for the great sweater, aunt mary" before you open the package, in my opinion.
bottom line for me is hide mode could ruin the vibe on this board and if, god forbid they ever use it here i personally will not reply to ANY of the posts that use it.

You can have a button with "thank you" and the content is only shown to all who clicked on that button.. But that makes not much difference since everyone will simply click on that button and then see the pics.. Quite the same as just having a look at the views of a thread..

The other solution (everyone has to type something until he see the pics/vids) will lead to the problem granddad said..

it's really simple

if we don't tell people we enjoy thier posts we discourage them
an example beat332001 posted a great mix over a tear ago had a bunch of views
and no comments that was his first post since then in the last year he has only posted
13 new threads how many great pics did we miss because no one including me
took the time to say thank you
it is discouraging to not get feedback personally it is telling me
people don't like the post enuff to comment
so why continue that thread
how many newbies do we get that post once or twice get no encouragement
and quit posting how many new and original pics have we missed because of our own thoughtlessness
there are already two or three comments i usually won't comment after a while
it gets ego stroking but if you are one of the first to view a post and like it leave a word
another comes to mind is flashphoto who's work is all original and hardly
gets any comments at all

i have 2 threads going now each of the threads i have posted about 1000 pictues including the zips. with about 3 responses each thread however there are over 40000 veiws between the threads .....that to me is very discouraging

granddad 01-28-2007 04:47 PM

believe me, i understand what you guys are saying about being discouraged. but don't you think forcing someone to reply before they even see the post makes the reply totally meaningless? i mean, what's the point- they can't even tell you whether they like it or not. how about if we all (myself included) just make a little more concerted effort to comment when we see something we like. ANYTHING but a hide mode.

i agree a hide function would be pointless..........there is nothing we can really do about only to b*tch once in a while

This is a subject I have trouble figuring out. See Im kind of new here, though Ive been lurking for a long time. I know how everyone frowns on lurkers who dont post anything. I dont have much content of my own that isnt already on this board already. (other than my personal pics of my ex that Im not sure if I want to post here or not).

So Im left with undesirable options; lurk, post "great pics" and "thanks" posts when I like the post, or re-post pics that Im sure people here have already seen a million times. Since each option seems to tick someone off, which is the best one? I love the content here and everyone seems great. Ive been banned from another board before for never making a post when I didnt have anything to contribute. And when I did, I said the wrong thing and got banned from a board I liked. So how do you have a decent post count, contribute and let people know you like thier posts without filling the board with senseless drivel?

The downside to that are the people who take this to the extreme and post 50 "great thnx" messages in every single thread of the last month. We've had this happen before and had to delete all of the posts. Overdoing it is just as bad as not doing it at all. If you want to thank, thank in moderation.
