Organising Collections -The Next Step, Storage needs

Hi All

Further to cecilbwilliams thread, How do you guys organise your..."collection"? I have the next problem along i.e. How do you save your collection i.e. my 120g hard drive only has 20g (not all porn) left so I need to think about storing my prized possessions (that would be my porn and music). I have recently read that digital media as in CD/DVD discs only have approx 5-year life span due to layer shift of inks/sputtering etc? This apparently is also the case in hard drives but though with a slightly longer life span. I read that tape media has the longest life for backups but it is expensive to set-up?

I was just wondering what does everyone else use? I don’t want to lose my prize collection, (that mainly comes from here funnily enough) but should I just purge and start again or is there some easy way to store my OCC favourites.

I would recommend getting either another additional internal hard drive or look for an external hard drive. Personally, I prefer external devices that use firewire (rather than USB) but that may require adding a firewire card to your computer.

Good luck,

try this

If you have nero you can back up all your collection onto a DVD disc. You have to make sure you save it as a DATA disc. This needs to be done with a program that can save as data because you can't just drag and drop OR copy and paste. That will give you about 4.5gb of storage.
I use nero just because i have it, but am sure theres other programs that can also do the job.
I also have 2 external hard drives and a 1GB memory stick.
hope this help's,
regards
CP.

Thanks Guys

Thanks Alex and Celeb Peeper

I think the external harddrive may be the way to go as I am a little worried about data leakage from recordable media i.e. CD/DVD recordable. May be interesting when blue ray comes on the market if that will affect data storage choices as well

Thanks again - also thanks for a great site (90% of my collection comes from here)

no prob's :)

heres a little nifty free tool, that you may wanna check out. Its a shortcut you can add to your taskbar, to make it easier to access all your folders. Its quick to download and very easy to use.

Sound just like what I need - I will give this prog a bash - I have problems if I have too many files in a folder as explorer slows right down when trying to open them (old computer) i.e. 30 secs to a minute to open. If there are too many files in the folder explorer will just hang! Funnily enough if I have too many sub folders I also have the same problem i.e. hanging + when saving to a CDR the burning prog will also hang as there are too many file names for it??

I promise I will get a new computer in 2006 (ish)
