Problem with .avi clips

When I left click on one of the avi clips in a posted thread I get a "Cannot find" screen. If I go back to the original screen and left click again, the site hangs up and I have to close it and start over. The only successful way I have of viewing an avi is to right click and save it to a temporary file. It then plays fine from that location. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on with my machine?

Thanks,

Gawker

all i know is.........

All the avi files i view here are played with real player.

It sounds like a browser issue. You may not have a default player selected to automatically play .AVI files.

Thanks,

Alex -- I looked in File Types, under Folder Options and it shows WMV assigned to play AVI files, which is what happens when I play and AVI from the files on my hard disk. Is there something I need to do in my browser, which is IE?

I'm sorry. I'm not an expert on this. :o

Hopefully someone else can help.

Thanks,

I am having a problem where when I left click the avi file, it is opening as a quicktime file in a new page. I think it has something to do with the Quicktime player. I have had this problem before but I can't remember how I fixed it. And I think it comes from Imbedded players on other sites automatically changing the settings somehow.

maybe its this

I never left click on a video, i always right click and save target as.

The trouble you have may well be somethign to do with how your PC and browser is setup, because by left clicking, you are trying to watch the video as its downloading.
Are you able to right click, save the video and then watch it ?

CP -- Yes if I right click it and save to a "temp" file I can then view it. This is only true of AVIs. With MPEGs, WMVs, MOVs I can left click and watch. Do you right click everything?

Can't speak for CP, but I always right click and save as . . . that way it is on my pc desktop (which I selected as my default target destination) so it is easy to move to my keep folder it it is a good clip. Also, it gives me a chance to scan it or check its properties if it looks in any way suspicious. I never like to run anything by left clicking directly . . . overly cautious I know, but better safe than sorry.

As for your initial problem, sorry that I can't help but I'm not too familiar with IE.
