I saw some stuff online about old adverts and how politically incorrect they would be today...

One of them, I’d guess from the 1950/60’s showed a husband spanking his wife for buying the wrong kind of beer for the weekend.

This made me wonder, did husbands really get to spank their wives like that in the past? As a proper punishment I mean rather than a sex game.

If they did I think I’d be very envious !

I think spanking was mostly played for comedic relief, such as Ricky spanking Lucy in I Love Lucy. Unfortunately, I think wives were much more likely to be smacked around then, and even that was played off as humor. See the Honeymooners and even an episode of the Andy Griffith Show.
