I have WinXP with the newest Windows Media player. I have updated Real Player but alot of the .avi files will not play. I think I may need a codec. Where can I get a ad and spy ware free codec if that is the problem? Next I have to figure out how to post. Yes, I am new to this....

Get the divx codec there. That'll help ya play .avi's. You might also want to pick up the free divx player (make sure it is the free one and not the pro version) - it is pretty good and it is always handy to have a couple of different types of players.

umm yeah. My opinion is that avi's suck (at least from a distribution and user point of view) Ever person that can encode in avi tends to use their own special little codec. I would however pick up at least the codec since it will allow you to play most avi files you will encounter.

You might also want to install the codecs provided here. That should cover the more common ones.
