Can you check my post. The word boyfriend is highlighted and underlined as a link to this site. When I click on it, it loads some stuff om my desktop. WTF?

Doesn't do that for me dro!?? If it's still doing it you could try clearing your occ cookies and see if it still does it when you sign back in. it's certainly an odd one! :)

Also you could try running a scan to see if you have any spyware etc loaded on your machine. I use this, its a free download and it's updated regularly..http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/.

I just checked your thread and there isn't any link. I'm afraid it sounds like a problem on your end. I know some spyware type software will replace certain keywords with links in your browser before displaying the page. I'm guessing that's your problem.

Please let us know what you find out.

I think it was my browser. I picked up something yesterday when I was at a sight and it needed and active x control to view the webpage. I didn't want to dl it but I had so many pages to go thru and didn't think it would hurt with all the updates I have done (not to mention the brand new ones I installed yesterday from microsoft). Boy was I wrong. Instant popups thru the blocker. Crash. Nothing but aggravation since trying to get rid of it. :mad: Never thought it could do something like highlight any word on a webpage as a link to advertise a corrupt websight. :mad: :mad: :mad:

I have used ad aware before on my old comp. and installed yesterday for this problem but it did not help. I did run it after this problem with the boyfriend link and it did seem to solve that problem but I was still getting the same popups so I then tried system restore to ealier date but it could'nt even do that (tried 2 diff dates) so I had to do a complete sys restore and then reinstall all the updates and patches this morning. Hopefully this took care of it. :confused: Looks like it's working so far.

At least thankfully it seems that it's not a problem for anyone else.

Damn it. As soon as I submitted this reply that same damn popup came up again. ARRRGGGG.

All right. Hopefully I got it now. ad aware wouldn't delete all the files. For some reason they kept coming back. That thing put .exe files , folders and registry keys all over the place. I tried another program called xoftspy but I had to pay to have removal access that I'm not sure would even remove them. It did however give the location of the sources. I guess you don't need to pay for a program to delete the file when you can just hunt and delete them. Just saves time (if it even works). Everything I deleted manually seems to be staying deleted. What a day.

You have my sympathy and empathy,. Been there, done that, etc. Adaware, spybot sandd, avg, and occasionally mcafee stinger seem to take care of all my problems. Good luck, and I love your posts, btw.

Geez that sucks dro. You might want to do a search for a program called "spywareblaster". This program is free and it actually stops spyware from being installed rather than merely cleaning your system like "adaware" and "spybot". I'd suggest running all three, but since I installed "spywareblaster" I only had the odd piece of spyware sneak through. It is great.

Also, what spyware does sneak through is usually on in the Internet Explore cache. I run that for a couple of sites, but usually I use Firefox and have had no problems with that while running the above 3 programs (in combination with AVG anti-virus and Zone Alarm firewall). All fantastic, free programs.

Thanks for the support guys. Everything seems to be back to normal now. This is the first major problem I have had with this new system and probably the second worst I have had since being on the internet. The last one I had with the old comp. destroyed part of the hard drive. I tried everything to fix it but I could still see that it was just eating away at the hard drive. Luckily I noticed it early enought to get everything that I needed copied. By the time I was finished copying, I couldn't do anything else with it except reformat. I think anyone who designs this type of stuff should be sent *****SOME PLACE BAD*****. Anyway, back to more happy thoughts now of finding more great stuff on OCC. ;) :)

that I have found that I like is spysubtract. They have a 30 day fully functional trial. It will find and remove reg entries, files, cookies, and progs already running in memory. This, in conjunction with spybot's teatimer, keep my machine clean of all sorts of malware.

DRO--

If you can identify any of the program's permutations (let's say if the program is named "rat"), RUN regedit, and search through the registry for that name, then delete. This will help keep it from reinstalling. But don't do regedit if you're not certain of the name...
