To answer your question:
In order to pay models your photographer needs paying customers which have dropped big time.
Think about it: More porn/nudes for free than ever before.
Few people pay for porn but many watch it.
Now with the web everything is shared (legal or illegal).
The only area growing is customized shoots/videos for a customer that get's the rights to the images and probably doesn't share them.
I've spent money on the sites; I've talked to producers by e-mail and the above is a brief summary of what I've been told.
I would love to hear some of our members who are producers give their thoughts. My conversations were about 18 months ago - maybe things have changed.

My wife was in some magazines when she was younger. She had a couple of offers from popular men's magazines but refused to do any topless or naked shots.

I have two websites that I've operated for 10 years. One features public nudity events such as Bay to Breakers, Biker parties, Fremont, etc. The other is specifically Mardi Gras. I shoot all my own material, so there is a fair amount of travel expense. We never made much money, but over 10 years we always had the same amount of subscribers. That has dropped 1/3 in the past year. Tumblr and sites such as this are eliminating the need for people to pay for their pictures.

i can 100% confirm that this economy is helping my recruiting. no jobs = women doing something they might not normally do for money :) also, the fact that a lot of porn is free, does hurt some sites, but if you have exclusive content, people will still take out their wallets to see something they can't find on the net very easily. my numbers have steadily gone up since i started in 2009
