I know very little about DVD recordables, but it might be a dvd+r and your drive might be a dvd-r or vice versa. Just an idea and may be way off - I'm still stuck using and burning cd-r's :(

I have a +/- burner so it works with all discs

Maybe

Maybe he was using it as an DVD +-rw and did not close the disk before giving it to you leaving it unreadable except for the type of RW drive he used...
or you need to load a code in order to see the disk (like the old RW cds).

Got NERO?

Open the "Nero InfoTool", and select your DVD-ROM. It will tell you what your ROM supports.

I suspect you may see that "DVD-R" is not supported by your ROM. I'm suffering the same problem at the moment....my ROM does not support DVD+R
