Unfortunately I don't think the owners of this site have become enlightened - granted neither has anyone else but Google & myself. A great Open Source video format promoted by Google and used on YouTube is WebM. Very small file size without quality loss.

I use WebM for all video content on my website. It is a shame that more website owners / content providers DO NOT. Forcing users to install Flash, Java, Divx or whatever codec to watch video is so 1999 and not very secure. No one should have to play hunt the codec - it should just work. HTML5 & WebM in the proper web browser - just works.

I use Arista Transcoder The easiest way to convert your media


Unfortunately Arista Transcoder does NOT support Microsoft Windows users. It's a damn shame because it would see very wide use if it did - do to it's ease of use and functionality.

Arista Transcoder supports multiple codec conversions - not just WebM only.

My operating system is Linux Mint - so I have no issues using Arista Transcoder.

WebM for Internet Explorer - to view WebM in IE9 or below you need this plugin installed. IE10 may now support WebM. That plugin is provided by Google.

Haven't taken the time to send a message. I was making no comment in regards to skill and really could take your reply the wrong way. The fact is you can talk to site owners and content producers until you are blue in the face and the just don't get it. Take a look around the Internet of some the biggest video producers - you will see they are still stuck in 1999. I could name some of them if you would like. At least one of them should know better - considering he is suppose to be a technology guru.

Then again many of these well known people also continue to use YouTube instead of their own websites to promote their content. Again a topic you can talk about until you are blue in the face and they just don't get it. Even though they use YouTube they don't use or promote the codec that Google converts all highend video to and the codec Google actually has given support and financial backing to - WebM ( Open Source no worries about getting hit up for a fee when some one tries to claim you are using their patent etc - no one on the backend has to pay either etc ) .

Once again I was just trying to be helpful and maybe slightly enlightening. Giving an answer to a question - in a way others wouldn't have. I took the time to provide helpful links and resources etc - yet seems for my time I get attitude from a member of the community.

At least the original poster appreciated the effort - which to me is all that matters.

Thanks for you for your suggestion for using WebM. As someone who is usually very lazy about these sort of things. I thought I'd give it a try as I was running out of HD space. True to your word there was no loss of quality and there was a big saving in way of space used. This is a big plus as I will be using this format to save my clips. For those who are interested I used the firefox browser with the Firefrogg app. Piece of P*ss as we say in Blighty:p

- I think you did take it the wrong way. My words were few, but sincere and appreciative. I knew almost none of what you offered, most notably the alternative offered by the WebM option.

I don't host a site but I do host some training videos for use in my profession, and the ability to offer content in a more efficient package without disappointing loss in quality is very attractive.

I thanked you for the links because you saved me bunches of research time. You know how it goes. I get proficient in a technology ancillary to my profession. Incorporate the tech into my work process. Take my eyes off the continued evolution of the tech while I focus on my larger purpose (training), and before I know it I'm giving shout-outs from 1999. It's hard to keep up with the changes.
