Some of these could perhaps be better described as burlesque dancers rather than belly dancers; and some are wearing pasties, so they are technically not topless, but I hope nobody minds. I'd never saw the attraction in belly dancing. It really was a non-starter for me. But, topless? Never came across it before. You certainly have my attention now! :D

Salome: In America, we have seen many of your photographs and there are several famous pictures of you with no top, just pasties over the nipple. Did you dance in these costumes or were they only for photo's? Who designed and made your dance wardrobe?

Princess Banu: In those days, in Turkey, dancers took off their skirts, it was part of the dance. I took off my top and revealed the pasties, it was my gimmick. All of my costumes were designed solely by me.

This time a few vintage topless belly dancers. These postcards are all about a century old, from north Africa. It seems that topless was the regular attire for the belly dancers from that region in those days!

My sentiments exactly! Belly dancing is not normally topless, but - as these pics demonstrate - it certainly improves the genre!

Probably not a belly dancer, but dressed to represent one, a model of Jean Agélou from around 1900. He had a Paris studio and specialised in art nudes, many of which featured this model, Fernande (probably a working alias).

I "landed" by chance on this old and dead thread... I have been always a lover of belly dance, I think that it is one of the most erotic and, at the same time, elegant performance that a woman can do and a beautiful gift for his/her lover. I have had realtionships with two or three girls that, even if not professional dancers, had studied Oriental Dance with native teachers and performed belly dance in public at clubs or fairs. They told me that their teachers have always said that traditional belly dance was never performed topless or nude and that, at the most, the dancer could skip wearing panties or a g-string under the flimsy gown.
However, when they performed for me or for a small circle of friends they danced in the nude and, belive me, it is one of the most erotic and sexy show that can be seen.....
