This is nonsense. I've used unRAR software on Macs for 5 years and have never had a problem.

However, I've never had to install virus protection software. Another reason not to own a PC.

I believe 7-zip has a mac version
 

in addition to various *NIX versions. As the name suggests, it supports seven different types of compression.

I used PC's for years but got a Mac a little over three years ago. I love it. I am not happy with the results I got with files other than the common zips. Why bother.
