Empty Hills, Pustye Kholmy (Russian: Пустые холмы) is a non-commercial open-air alternative arts and music festival in Russia. The festival is held annually since 2003 (usually several days in June) in Kaluga Oblast or Smolensk Oblast. As a non-profit event, it exists solely due to volunteers' efforts. The number of visitors grew from 300 in 2003 to about 45000 in 2008. Unlike most music festivals, Empty Hills has no specific musical format or style. Among genres represented on the festival, there are folk music, blues, rock music, reggae, sometimes electronic music, jazz or avant-garde. All participants undergo rigorous selection by a special committee; the choice is made in favor of the most musically prominent bands, regardless their commercial success or popularity. Thus, in the final program of the festival about half of the participants are known to only a few people, and for many their appearance at the "Hills" is their first step to recognition. |
Wing Bowl

Wing Bowl is an annual eating contest founded in 1993 by Philadelphia talk-radio hosts Al Morganti and Angelo Cataldi as a celebration of gluttony. The contest was first broadcast on WIP (AM).
About 150 people attended Wing Bowl I (held in a hotel) in 1993 to see a competition between two contestants. The event pits competitive eaters in a chicken wing eating contest. The Wing Bowl is traditionally held on the Friday preceding the Super Bowl. The event, which began as a radio promotion, has grown to encompass television, the Internet, and a contest for women who are termed "the Wingettes." It is currently held at Philadelphia's Wachovia Center, where it is still broadcast live on WIP. There are currently no television deals to broadcast the event live; however, a replay is usually shown on WPSG, Comcast SportsNet, or one of the other local stations within the following week. The Wing Bowl now draws crowds of 20,000 or more. |

Fremont Summer Soltice Parade

Solstice Cyclists
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search Naked cyclist streaking the 1995 Summer Solstice Parade. This would have been before this had become an established tradition; at this time the police were still hassling naked cyclists in the parade. Painted Inline skaters often join the cyclists. (2007) Art bikes, as seen here (2005) and below (2007), are becoming increasingly popular. The Solstice Cyclists (also known as The Painted [Naked] Cyclists of the Solstice Parade, or The Painted Cyclists) is an artistic, non-political, clothing-optional bike ride celebrating the spirit of the Summer Solstice, and which constitutes an unofficial start for the Summer Solstice Parade & Pageant, an event produced by the Fremont Arts Council in the Fremont district of Seattle. The loosely organized event was originally started by streakers who crashed the parade, but has changed over the years, as participants decided to emphasize bodypainting and other forms of creative artistry done in the spirit of the host event. The group is now the largest and fastest growing ensemble associated with the parade. The parade, which is put on by the Fremont Arts Council, starts at noon on the third Saturday in June (which is the Saturday before or on the actual Solstice); the painted cyclists typically arrive at around 11:45 a.m. and ride for a little over an hour. Art bikes are also common during the event, and many different types of human-powered cycles have also been used including BMX bikes, cycle rickshaws, unicycles, clown bicycles, tall bikes, lowrider bicycles, tandem bicycles and tricycles. People have come from all over the country to ride, and all over the world to see the ensemble. Full and partial (especially topfree) nudity is popular, but not mandatory, on all rides. While the cyclists open the parade by tradition, they are not officially in the parade line-up (with the exception of 2003 when they had a float). Despite this apparent disconnect, there is a considerable amount of collaboration between many local arts groups. Parade participants who want to be bodypainted are often referred to pre-ride bodypainting parties, and some of the cyclists also work in the FAC's Solstice Parade Workshop on their art bikes or on other parade entries. Participants are expected to abide by the FAC's Parade rules that state "any printed communications, written words, recognizable logos, signage, leaf-letting, or advertising in any form are prohibited on the parade route." In recent years the event includes three major components: a pre-ride bodypainting party (disclosed only to participants and potential riders), an extended party ride (often indirect) through the city, and then the parade itself starting at noon. Cyclists wishing to get involved in the group who haven't heard about the bodypainting party often meet up at the beginning of the parade route. |

Comic-Con International: San Diego Venue San Diego Convention Center Location San Diego, California Country United States First held 1970 Organizer Comic-Con International Filing status Non-profit Attendance Nearly 126,000 in 2009.[1] Official Website http://www.comic-con.org/ San Diego Comic-Con International (as given in its logo), also known as Comic-Con International: San Diego (as given on its web site), and commonly known as Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con, was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and later the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 by Shel Dorf[2] and a group of San Diegans.[3] It is traditionally a four-day event (Thursday through Sunday — though a four-hour preview night on Wednesday is open to professionals, exhibitors, and some guests pre-registered for all four days) held during the summer in San Diego, California, United States, at the San Diego Convention Center. Comic-Con is both the name of the annual event and the common name of the organization. Comic-Con International also produces two other conventions, WonderCon and the Alternative Press Expo (APE), both held in San Francisco, California. Since 1974, Comic-Con has bestowed its annual Inkpot Award to guests and persons of interest in the industries of popular arts as well as to members of Comic-Con's Board of Directors and convention committee. It is also the home of the Will Eisner Awards. Originally showcasing comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television (as was evident by the three circled figures appearing in Comic-Con's original logo), and related popular arts, the convention has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture elements, such as horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. The convention is the largest in the Western Hemisphere, and second largest in the World after Angoulême International Comics Festival in France,[4][5][6] filling to capacity the San Diego Convention Center with over 125,000 attendees in 2007. |

Love parade
10 Attachment(s)
The Love Parade (German: Loveparade) was a popular electronic dance music festival and parade that originated in 1989 in West Berlin, Germany. It was held in Germany annually between 1989 and 2003 in Berlin, and then from 2006 to 2010 in the Ruhr. The 2004 and 2005 events in Berlin and the 2009 event in Bochum [1] were cancelled.
On 24 July 2010, a crowd crush at the Love Parade caused the death of 21 people, with at least 500 others injured. As a consequence of this, the organiser of the festival announced that no further Love Parades would be held. They also said that the Love Festival was permanently cancelled. |

Bodypainting Festival in Germany

PrintE-MailFeedback08/11/2008
Turning Human Bodies Into Works of Art Sixty bodypainters from around the world converged on the German city of Mainz at the weekend for the Fifth International Bodypainting Festival. The models had to show stamina -- a painting can take up to 14 hours to complete. Bodypainters came to the German city of Mainz for the Fifth International Bodypainting Festival at the weekend to adorn models from head to toe with brightly colored and in many cases highly original artwork. It's a tough job for the models, some of whom have to sit or stand still for up to 14 hours. The artists competed in a number of categories including special effects, facepainting. The artists use airbrushes, sponges or normal brushes to paint the models. It's a very short-lived art form though. One shower and hours of work disappears forever. |
