Clarification?

A thread featuring a picture from Burning Man was recently obliterated. I have no quarrel with the policy established by Alex in https://forum.oneclickchicks.com/showthread.php?t=67409 ; OCC capitulation, however craven, to being legally outgunned may certainly be condoned in the context of the greater good. Nor do I necessarily object to the choice to spin this position as the linked text does. I do question, though, removing any more than the offending photo, under the policy as it now stands: either the rest of the thread should have remained, or the policy should be modified to indicate that not only photos and videos, but in fact ANY MENTION OF THE EVENT OR LINKING TO OTHER SITES FEATURING IT, is also proscribed.

The thread was about one single Burning Man pic. Removing the pic and leaving the thread would have left an empty thread about a non-existant pic. The thread wasn't removed because it was about or mentioned Burning Man, only because it wouldn't have made sense to have a pic-less thread, if the pics in question aren't allowed.

And yet in point of fact there WAS another picture in the thread, demonstrably NOT from Burning Man, as well as identification of the first picture's origin and tips for finding more without posting any here, so the question remains...

Ok... You can always post any non-Burning Man pics in another thread. There's plenty of options. You can even start a new one. The fact remains that that thread would have been useless one way or another.

Does this mean that a post or thread NOT featuring BM photos/video, but acknowledging the event's existence AND linking (even if not directly, by using, say, "hxxp") to places that DO feature BM photos/video, is acceptable? THAT's the question I think was raised at first and deserves an answer; if that answer is "no," my point about revising the policy statement should also be addressed.

Burning Man's existence is mentioned all over the forum already. Klondike mentions it all the time. So yes on that part. As far as linking, I don't know for sure. Using indirect links, I assume would be OK. But you would need to ask Alex for a definitive answer.

If you find burning man photos or videos that are hosted on another free site you may post links in the "Free Sites" or "Rapidshare" forum here. We just don't want any images (including thumbnails) or videos uploaded to our servers.

Thanks,

On a related note, fairly frequently I will see a burning man photo in a thread, but one that was taken inside a tent or something, or shot in such a way that the location is not readily apparent. These often look like ordinary public nudity pics, and so I figure few will make an issue out of it. Should I be reporting these? Probably, right...? I mean, someone that really has experience with burning man pics would be able to tell as I can where the pic was taken. So potentially, it could create a problem. Seems it is my duty to report....

And also - what is the policy concerning REGIONAL burning man events? Burning Man's position regarding photography and the contention that all photos taken are property of burning man could conceivably apply to the smaller regional events also. I have often felt a bit guilty posting these as they can be quite small events with under 50 participants. But my guess is the big guns are aimed at pics mainly from the mother event because they are so numerous, and because the mother event has the resources to force compliance. The smaller events do not have the resources to go after folks on the net, and the number of pics is much smaller anyway.

I think the real issue with "regional burning man events" is whether or not they're officially part of the Burning Man organization; I've always assumed not, both because they all have different names (and use code like "afterburn," "burners" or "BRC," rather than ever using the official name) and because I've never seen an objection about photos of their events turning up here. If they aren't actually affiliated, then there should be no problem with those being posted.

Its probably something that could be looked into. Even without direct affiliation, they're policies may mimick the mother event. But maybe the bottom line is has anyone ever complained? If not, then we should be OK. To my knowledge, no one has complained.

I know a regional burner over at Flickr, but asking could open a can of worms. So I'm mum......but then again, it might be good to be prepared because when the first wave of burning man complaints arrived here a few years back, I lost an entire thread that was pretty important to me. See this coming full circle now, Crispus?

I don't feel like starting a new thread for this, since it's more a comment than anything, but it's bizarre to be following a thread and then that thread just disappears one day with no notice. Recently this happened with that Dutch TV hostess, which was an awesome thread. And now the whole thing's gone, and no explanation given or reference to its ever having existed.

I think its a valid point...

a pm to a mod will usually clear things up, but one must make the effort.

The thread was never removed. You can still find it here.

A recent post and two comments relating to the post were removed. The post was about the host being pee'd on during a fetish show. As watersports are not allowed here it was removed.

Aha. I searched for it by looking through my own posts, because I knew I'd recently posted on it. And then it wasn't in page 1 or 2 of either "free sites" or "rapidshare files"--when you removed the offending posts it just was as if there hadn't been a new post in the thread for 5 days, so it was back a few pages.
