Women hold topless march in Maine 4-3-2010

"About two dozen women drew a crowd of onlookers when they shed their shirts and marched downtown in Maine's largest city to promote what they call equal-opportunity public toplessness.

Organizer Ty MacDowell said the point of Saturday's march in Portland was that a topless woman out in public shouldn't attract any more attention than a man who walks around without a shirt.


The Portland Press Herald reports that by the end of the march, more than 500 people had amassed — a mix of marchers, young men snapping photos, oglers and people just out enjoying a sunny, warm day.

It's not illegal for a woman to be topless in public in Maine, and police said there were no incidents or arrests."

Has anybody saved this? Is there any chance it could be posted to Rapidshare? It's just my internet connection appears to be too slow to stream it . . .

The only way to accomplish that is for more women to do it frequently so that we all get used to it!

I saw the contest after I posted these pics, and entered some of them... One of the organizers said they may do it again hoping for it to become common to see women topless... If I hear about more marches I will be there with my camera and post more pictures... Hopefully more to come...

i had no idea there was no law against being topless in Maine before this march, so i have to say the organizers succeeded in raising awareness.

why they started by marching past a porno shop (video expo, across the street from "joe's smoke shop") i have no idea.

Yeah, the more they do it, I'm afraid, the less tolerant the town will become. They'll go "Wait a minute, do we REALLY want to allow toplessness here". This is what has happened in Ashland, Or and Brattleboro, VT when people have flaunted relaxed nudity laws. Its cool to be able to say that toplessness is legal, but its also safe because no one really expects that women would actually take them up on their offer en masse. Do that, and the law will get changed in no time. My hat is off to these women and to Portland, but the dark forces are probably already circling the wagon......

I don't mean to be too cynical, though, as this whole thing is cool. Great thread and pics. This is something that we have not seen hardly at all in a sizeable American city. The fact that it was well attended and locally organized and took place in a busy downtown area - that is very rare and definately something to keep an eye on.

i think i saw that UMO (that's University of Maine Orono) had some Earth Day naked green-painted bike riders. i saw a SFW pic on some news site but hopefully there's more out there.

I stand corrected... Saturday was the organizer walking around topless advertising the march... The actual march will be held this Friday (4-30) at 1pm...

Maine women are not known for being to pretty, but nice post.

Im glad they do this. A lot of men should be made to wear shirts. Ugh manboobs and/or back hair.
