Does any one have experience either acting in, or seeing a friend/family member in a play that requires nudity? My daughter, Mandy, now 22, has been an actress since her early teens. When she was in college, she was either partially undressed or fully nude in two performances. My wife and I, along with our son, have seen all of her performances, including the nude one, but I don't know if it's appropriate. Her first performance,when she was 18, was the female lead in a British comedy called, "What the Butler Saw." Most of the show Mandy was in skimpy bra and panties, although in one scene, Mandy is in a dressing room and strips down to put on a short, flimsy, low-cut hospital gown. In the performance we saw, the curtain to the dressing room did not close fully, and some members of the audience, including us, saw Mandy fully nude. The scene that followed required some physical comedy, and since she was naked underneath her hospital gown, her ass and full breasts came into view. Mandy later said she was extremely embarrassed knowing that her parents, brother, and friends, had seen her naked. When she was 20, her college performed "Hair"--the original version with the nude scene. At that point she was more comfortable being nude. The theater was smaill and very intimate, so we were very close to the performers as they started to strip down for the famous skinny dipping scene. I was embarassed for my daughter, but still kept my eyes open because I wanted to see the other sexy co-eds. Still, I knew that if I watched the others, it would also mean seeing Mandy naked. Not as exciting as your story, but I was part of a production where the musicians (me) were off stage--this is also where the women changed due to lack of space.

I saw all of my female friends completely nude for the whole run, including rehearsals. I think you can sense my mixed feelings about seeing my daughter naked in both plays, and particularly Hair, she was completely exposed to the audience. The theater was very small--a large classroom really. Chairs around the edge of the room, small stage and minimal sets in the middle. Some of the girls in the cast were real lookers, including her friend, Kate. Kate was thin, 19, medium tits, and a long mane of blond hair. Closest I can get to a story is about a female friend of mine in college who wanted to be an actress so joined the local drama society. She would have been around 17 at the time of joining.

After she had been there a while there was a session that they had that involved all members performing famous scenes from movies or theatre that involved nude scenes. She had to do a scene with a male colleague fully nude in front of around 30 of her fellow drama students.
I never saw this, she never (to my knowledge) appeared naked in a play in public but she did have to do this. She told me about it some years later, I never asked too many questions about how she felt as I didnt want to come across as a perve. Fair to say by the blushing that even several years later the memory still embarrassed her.

I'm not sure it's normal for someone to describe their own daughter in this way.

I've seen a few female students go completely naked on stage, and the thought that they were doing so in front of their friends made it even better (not that I knew them at all). I understand that actresses always have the option of a bodysuit, at least in my local acting college, and luckily none have chosen to use it. Hopefully more of the same this semester.

But there's an undercurrent to the opening post that I find quite uncomfortable, and I don't really buy into it either. I know there is a thread elsewhere that focuses on nudity in plays that has some stories but it would be great if this could be added to with any stories about amateurs or famous celebs naked in plays.

My wife's brother was, for a short time, married to a woman who was involved in local theater. During the earlier part of this decade, she was acting in a Shakespeare play (I believe it was The Tempest). On opening night, a large group of her friends and family were in attendance. Appearing in lingere was not a big deal until the director, a man in his 30s, took Mandy and another actress aside and said that he wanted them to dress as provocatively as possible because once the reviews come out, it will attract a larger audience (the theater company has not been doing well financially). Specifically he proposed sheer bra and panties. To protect the girls' modesty, he said he would have the stage lights dimmed somewhat, but the scene requires them to run around. I'm concerned about the ethical issues here--is it right for a director to ask young girls in a community theater to bare their bodies to raise money for the company? Also, my wife asked Mandy about her "costume". The bra and panties are see-through and even in dim light the audience will see her nipples and mound. This isn't really an advice forum, but since you're asking for advice...

I don't believe that there is any objective right/wrong when it comes to nudity, so it is entirely up to you and your daughter to decide what is right for you. Some families would see any naked appearance on stage as the work of the devil to be avoided at all costs. Other families are accustomed to nudity at home and would think nothing of a naked (or near-naked) stage role.

The director has fairly explicitly stated that he wants to make money off of your daughter's body. If she doesn't like that she has a right to say so, and you might be able to find a clause in some agreement somewhere that prohibits that sort of thing - but of course the director always has the option to find someone else for the part, which would leave your daughter out of a role (but maybe feeling better about herself). On the other hand, if she is OK doing it, she might be able to negotiate some extra pay (i.e. tell the director that wearing sheer underwear makes her a bit uncomfortable, and since the move is designed to bring in money for the company she ought to see some of that money).

As for your concern about seeing your daughter naked, get over it already. Although many churches will disagree, there is nothing morally wrong with seeing another person naked in a non-sexual situation, family member or not. Unless you find yourself having sexual urges, there is nothing to worry about.

Well, the dress rehearsal for Lend Me a Tenor was last night and my wife and I attended, along with friends and relatives of the cast. As you know, I had mixed feelings about seeing this show. I was in a production of Aida, I'm not an opera singer, they needed supers (extras) to be litter carriers for the stars. They only had a big area backstage curtained off for a dressing room that we were to share with the ballet troupe of 18, the plan was the girls would do their changes, then the guys and back and forth, 3 for each of us. O f course even at the calm dress rehearsal this didn't work because was all had limited time to change and get back ready to go on. The guys just had to go from one type of loin cloth to another, but you would be surprised how long that takes when there are a bunch of dancers topless changing tutus all around you.

I found this post online when searching for people in similar situations, so I thought I’d add my thoughts, since I know someone going through the same thing. My friend and I are both freshman drama students in college, and she got cast as the lead in this musical called The Robber Bridegroom. It’s kinda like a folk musical and comedy, like Lil Abner. She got the lead roll, which is a really big deal for a freshman. Although she’s a great actress and has a great voice, I’m so worried she got the part for the wrong reasons, and I’m really worried about her. Her character loses her clothes in one scene, but usually the play is done with the actress in a body suit or some sort of scenery in front of her. It’s a comedy, so it’s played for laughs and the nudity isn’t really necessary. But the director spoke to my friend after casting the show and said he had decided to play the scene as realistically as possible, which will involve full nudity for about 5-10 minutes on stage. She will be the only actor naked on stage, and I just think it’s so inappropriate. She was originally going to tell the director she wouldn’t do it, but she eventually said yes. I think she’s being naive and not realizing the director is taking advantage of her because she’s cute and has a very large chest. I just hate to think of her getting embarrassed and having people talk about her. What is the protocol for a situation like this for a college play?

When I was in college a neighbor of mine played Puck in a role that was traditionally nude, she played it in a skin colored bodysuit. Since this part was advertised as using a bodysuit your friend has every reason to not go through with it. The director was deceitful and may have intended to play this on whoever got the part, big chest or not. Obviously it's not just Hollywood casting agents that are scum.

When this play was originally done on Braodway the female lead (broadway legend Patti Lapone) was in fact actually naked (but covered by a long wig). The other way the show has been done in professional productions has been to have the actress nude, but behind strategically placed props a la Austin Powers. Bodysuits are used more often in amateur productions. So I would say the director is not necessarily out of line, depending on how he is staging it.

Show your friend this, it may make her feel better

I think there was an episode of Eight is Enough when one of the daughters had to be nude in a play she was in. If I remember correctly, the father either couldn't or wouldn't go to see it.

Thanks for the posts. I'll show my friend that article. But I do agree with the person who said the director was kind of misleading. Plus this is college and my friend is just a freshman. I think the nudity will upstage the humor and end up embarrassing my friend. She already gets teased for her looks a lot, and I'm sure it'll get worse after the show.

I thought about complaining to the administration, but I assume the director has told them his decision and everyone is fine with it, so I'm kinda fighting a losing battle. I don't want to ruffle too many feathers. I just feel sorry for my friend.

For the person who asked if I would be seeing my friend perform, um, yeah, I don't have a choice since I'm in the show too. Just a chorus part, but I'll at least be there to support my friend if she needs me. I do also have to say I saw the costumes being and a couple of those, particularly my friend's, are kinda skimpy if you ask me. But maybe I just need to relax.

Not a good assumption. You should feel comfortable raising your concerns with the dean of students, or a faculty member you feel comfortable with.

The director should have informed people at tryouts that the role required nudity, but afaik it's not that uncommon. Besides that, I don't see the problem. Actors and actresses get cast for physical traits all the time, I don't see how this is any different as long as there's more to the performance (and there obviously is here). That's not exploiting, that's just how performance arts work.

Your friend needs to decided if potential embarassment and "people talking about her" are worth taking the part. She seems to have decided that it is worth it without any coercsion. To me that is plenty good enough. College freshman can make their own decisions.

Lastly I think JennyNM is blowing the potential problems of embarrassment and "people talking about her" way out of proportion. Many people, especially people with beautiful bodies as your friend seems to have, find that being naked in a socially acceptable situation is rather liberating. She obviously has no reason to be embarrassed, although if she does feel that way it is understandable. But only she can decide that. As for people talking about her, this would be a good point 40 years ago, but society has changed a lot. Almost nobody I know would think of less of someone for taking a nude part in a play, and the few prudes I do know that might feel this way aren't worth caring about.
