Southern Hemisphere WNBR this weekend!

Just a reminder to any members who live in the southern half of the world, there are several naked bike rides happening this weekend.

For a full listing with times and details, follow the link below. The northern rides bring in hundreds of shots of naked girls in public, lets hope we get a few from 'down south'!

...and not just "down under"...

...but in good old Eugene OR as well, if the following is to be believed: http://www.registerguard.com/csp/cms...0-55/story.csp and it sounds like daytime, not night as was the case last year. Australia actually started last week, in Nimbin, described as a "hippie town" in some reports I read (sound familiar, Eugene?); found only one picture so far with pixellated manbits and hidden female ones, so won't bother to post it but will keep looking!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT EUGENE'S MARCH RIDE!!

Crispus, you just paid me back and just in time, too. I may be able to make it down! :) Oh lord, and its going to rain too......

wow - I just got thru telling this guy in NZ to get his butt over to Golden Bay tomorrow. Meanwhile, I got a ride in my own back yard, and its 20hrs til showtime..

EDIT: 5:30PM, Monroe Park. A bit late, but it will still be light. I know the territory. WISH ME LUCK, GUYS!!

Pedro the Fisherman 03-14-2009 04:15 AM

Good luck Klondike, I did not realise you were that close!

I thought everywhere in that part of the world was about 10 hours drive away!! March sounds a bit cold too, that far north:eek:

the cold worries me and I don't really know why they even hold a March ride. the drive doesn't (90 miles - just a skip in the park...).

Sundown is 7:20PM and they better have most of it over by then 'cause I ain't shooting night pics!! That flash causes too many bad vibes...

The Eugene WNBR went off without a hitch with a full police escort (what a difference a year makes!). The cops were all on motorcycles and it looked like a presidential motorcade was passing thru..

Anyway, but I quess I'm not the most patient or dedicated photographer. I snapped some pics of riders which I'll post in a day or so. Otherwise, it was cold and wet and there was not much posing and bodypainting pre ride. I missed the post ride entirely. There were maybe 15 women total showing skin, of which 3-5 were fully nude. So the opportunities were somewhat limited and I did an average job of getting women in my shots. All in all though, I only have 5-10 decent pics. It was all over in just a few minutes......

Its always a good time though. :) And there were lots of other photogs around so hopefully some better pics will surface on the net.

...and so far at least, cold and rainy Eugene may still have been the nudest of the spring: in Sao Paolo, Canberra and Sydney people had to cover up (in Sydney, as you see, body paint, which IS enough for the Sydney Body Art Ride - on top, anyway - wasn't for this one). In Byron Bay there was full (painted) nudity, though so far I've only found male. Ah well, there's still next week's edition, and Klondike's photos... Canberra 1-2, Sydney 3-7, SP 8.

Klondike 03-15-2009 07:19 PM

I think that the WNBR may be approaching its "crisis" point. That often occurs when a young event like this reaches its maximum popularity and exposure. Frequenty when that happens, conservative forces start to kick in, and it can be all downhill from there. I would hate to see this happen to WNBR, but WNBR pics are heavily faved over at Flickr, and attendance at this years Eugene ride was very high - the riders had to start off by negotiating a gauntlet of spectators. This is also why I haven't posted my measily offering of pics yet. Pedro noted some disturbing trends in last years London ride. Portland's night ride last year was big, but they moved the assembly area to get away from downtown and photography was not encouraged. And now Crispus's report is less than encouraging.

Anyway, not to sound overly negative, but you won't be missing much if I don't post my pics. I will likely post a couple - just not sure which ones yet and it may depend partly on what other pics surface from Eugene.

I can go thru these periods were i get depressed about the picture taking, and Crispus's post just caught in one of those moods. What I can never quite figure in all this, though, is how much of the negative factor comes from the women themselves, and how much comes from people on the outside - officials, police, husbands, wives, etc.
Either way, though - its enough to cause me to think that at least delaying the posting of pics will help lessen their impact a bit. Wait until the rush is over in otherwords, and everyone has gone back to just surfing Flickr for cool pics of sunsets or whatever...

Also see my reply today to the nude madrid protest thread, and note that Pedro told me recently that the future of St Mary's College naked run is in question due to media coverage.

Klondike you shouldn't be surprised.. if you remember my bike thread from last year, you'll note the mentioning of the heavy police presence..and, well it seems not much has changed

So guys, a reminder, in future don't get excited when wnbr comes around down under....some of the laws down here are so screwed up it's not funny anymore....You can get arrested for riding a bike nude, but it's ok to head butt and knockout a cop(yes, a f-witt was found not guilty last week, and is off scott free)

btw why did you delete the bike pic you posted some 10 hrs back?

It was only up for about 2 minutes - I'm surprised anyone saw it.

I'll repost it within the week. That one and a few others. This is all a part of the issues i wrestle with from time to time about what to post and what not to post of the pics I take.

I was talking above about the photographer-rider relationship and then along comes this pic.

From Sao Paulo, 2009. kinda makes me sad, but instead of a ruined shot, we have a very interesting shot (and statement)

It's the same woman from the last picture in my post; not sure if she just doesn't want her image all over the world, or if she's only concerned about getting into local trouble: in SP last year there were confrontations with police, resulting in people having to cover up, and it looks like the stance was more unbending this year. On the brighter side, Oz's Melbourne and NZ's Golden Bay were fully nude: here are some from the former I didn't try to get bigger sizes of (they're from news media and pixellated, but they indicate there will be more to see as pictures from those rides come in). Note that, as happened a couple of years ago in Boulder, a wedding was caught up in the fun...

noting the less than stellar quality of the melbourne pics makes me feel a little better about my own. here's two of mine from Eugene. Thanks Crispus - I love 'em all - hi Q and lo Q so please don't stop posting....

The guy in purple pants was a homeless man, possibly inebrieted, who just got caught up in the excitement of the ride. He was just walking down the sidewalk pushing his shopping cart when it all happened. So he decides to try and give the riders high fives as they go by:) Most just laughed and waved, but one topless girl took him up on the offer (second pic). Pretty funny...

I do have a few pics that are better quality than these, so stay tuned..

EDIT: Hey wait - these weren't taken in the southern hemisphere, so I can't put them here, right? :) I mean, Eugene is about halfway to the NORTH pole, not south :) I think its great that no one here wants to miss out on the fun. If someone SOMEWHERE is having a ride, they're gunna ride too, come rain or sleet or snow!!

Even though the pic's a bit blurry, you can tell that girl's a total cutie. The sexy stockings and panties are a nice touch, too. Great work in catching her, Klondike. Any chance you happened to get more of her?

Thanks

Turns out Eugene was not the only Northern Hemisphere "solidarity" event: Brighton also had one; the only photo I found other than this one, though, is over 7MB and doesn't really show much more... http://nicksayers.com/_files/bnbr-pr...9-JJWaller.jpg for the big one.

Pedro the Fisherman 03-19-2009 01:49 PM

Agh, you beat me to it crispus!
These are the organisers and friends of the Brighton WNBR. The gathering was a way of promoting the event via the local media and getting the word out for June 14th 2009. I had an invite to attend, but could not make it! That blonde girl is new to me, she was not on the ride in 2008.

YES! There WAS nudity, however little, at Sao Paolo, in addition to a little discreet top-dropping (or at least unhooking, as was the case in Lima last year: a common expedient when the police are looming), the latter seen in the first and second pictures. The lone nude woman from last year, seen getting painted on that ride in the last picture, did attend and get painted, but I haven't found any from this year where she removed so much as her top. But, as they say, the devil is in the details, and here I've found her (check the little horns!): doing the roll-down-panties trick (so much cuter than when the men do it), full monty, bike lifting (probably only top-free, though the photo doesn't show it), and finally covered back up after the police are on scene.

I am almost certain this pic I took will be the best one to surface from the Eugene March ride. Experience pays off here. Last year, I had no idea what direction the riders were going to take off in at the start. This year, I knew they would head south, and so I made sure I parked and stood in the right spot to get them as they departed Monroe Park.

Oh, and having this ride in daylight too didn't hurt, I suppose......:) note the rain - and that my lens stayed dry!

Going on past poorish returns, i didn't bother searching for anything this year.. Trust our spaced-out loony friends from Nimbin to come forward :)

Well in approx 3 hrs time they're gonna be riding in my city. I'd go and have a look, but i'm sure there will be more cops than riders just like last year, and everybody will have to cover up

Still nothing of her from the ride, but here she gets painted; still don't know if she ever undressed for the ride itself (maybe if my Portuguse were a little better?). Also, Melbourne's first gallery is now up http://australia.worldnakedbikeride....et1/index.html with 2 more alleged to be coming soon. These are all watermarked, and are nowhere near the size of the Nimbin paint party ones, but they do have full nudity, including an unpixellated version of the previously-mentioned wedding photo...

Type: Causes - Rally
Network: Global
Date: Saturday, June 20, 2009
Time: 11:00am - 2:00pm
Location: Central Park
City/Town: New York, NY
Description
The NYC Chapter of the World Naked Bike Ride will be hosting it’s annual
bike ride on June 20th, 2009. The general message of WNBR is a protest
against oil dependency and body shame. WNBR advocates and celebrates
sustainable energy, environmentally- responsible living, human-powered
transport and body-positive values. The NYC Chapter is currently looking
for a facility in the area of Central Park to host a body painting party

Thats a great set, Crispus - good that someone is checking Flickr regularly for these since they didn't show up right away. The photographer here did a great job and produced some very high quality pics. Its really a very complete set too, showing you different angles and pre-ride as well as ride and post ride. You don't see this with most of the more obscure rides, so we are very lucky to have these pics. thanks again!

here is a WNBR item of interest - it looks like Seattle and Portland are not divulging the exact date of their bike rides on the WNBR wiki site this year. Presumably this is to cut down on attendees with cameras and such. Actually, this is really not a bad idea (we know its one of two possible weekends in June and the info can be gotten elsewhere). But I mean, if it will make the participants more comfortable having the exact date somewhat of a mystery, it could boost ridership. More riders, less cameras = better experience overall. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how many other rides go this route.
