allowing rar-files as attachments?
hello board-team,
i would like to ask if it would maybe be possible to allow files with rar-endings to be uploaded as attachments. i think it would make things easier considering splitting bigger files without having to edit then with a video program which seems way more difficult and circumstanding. i think it would make the handling of uploading the videos better and maybe the contribution rate could even get higher than it already is. heat |
i must agree.
i have always the same problem, i only use rar files on my computer, and when i want to upload a picture pack or something, it is first completely uploaded and then i'm told that is an invalid file. so here are 2 ideas: 1) allow rar 2) or check the file _BEFORE_ uploading cheers |
hello world?
(aka anybody there?) |
Years ago we chose not to allow .RAR files for a couple of reasons.
Support was limited nor non PC users and also we didn't want people trying to get around the old upload limits by uploading multi-part .RAR files. There's nothing more frustrating than try to un-RAR something when you find out you are missing a part. I believe support is better for MAC users now. It is something we may consider again if there is enough interest. Thanks, |
Although I do agree I find it to only be a slight inconvenience.

alex, then tell me how to upload large videos, without splitting them and loss of quality, there can also be a missing part and it isn't complete
and in fact, rar compresses much better than zip and the change in the upload source is as minimal as possible ... |
Thanks for the positive reply. I hope it will be changed in near future. :)

i've started using this free movie splitter, it works great.
http://movietoolbox.com/splitter.html i just use the trial version, sometimes i get a message stating only registered users can split to more than three files, i just restart it and the problem seems to go away ;) |
Alex, rar support on Macs has improved greatly over the years (multiple free apps handle them) so count me as another 'yes please' vote.

I guess I'll be the bad guy here. I hate rar files.
The technology is great IF those creating the files knows what they are doing. However, I've spent hours downloading files just to find, for example, that file 3 of 4 is corrupt. When one part of a rar split is bad, the whole thing is useless. That is frustrating. Just my opinion. |
The issue with "split archives" is one I have come across in my time as well. The only real way around it is to just say no to splits.
The majority of people I know use WinRAR to compress files, WinRAR allows you to create both ZIP and RAR files. RAR allows for greater compression in my experience. Personally, I have no preferrence as to whether RAR should be allowed. If it makes it easier for people post with RARs then it's a good idea I suppose. Count me in as well. :D |
