It is a choice, but there can also be influences.
When my wife started out in nudism, she was "determined" to keep her pubes. She felt it was "classier" or whatever.

I can't speak about nude beaches as my wife and I haven't been on one in over 10 years. My recent experiences are at nudist resorts in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida. At these resorts, it's a rare sight to see hair down below. I would say about 95% or more are all bare down below.

My wife candidly explained to me her decision to "not go back the other way" after her initial tentative foray into being bald (because everyone else was bald).

The extra sensations.

Nope, not even remotely true. We still see nudists with pubes on the beach. Specifically, Gunnison Beach in NJ, which gets a huge cross section of ages, ethnicities, and body types. The nude beach is more about individual expression; while the nudist resort is more about community. Different cultures and different vibes.

Even though shaved still dominates both scenes; it is more so at the resort because "conformity" is more of a thing there.

Shaving the pubes and personal choice
 

The first time the wife and I went to a clothing optional resort back in the 90s.

My wife and I started, briefly, with untamed pubic hair years ago, when we first began visiting clothing optional parks and resorts. We quickly observed that most nudists or naturists were at least trimmed and many were completely smooth, so we began experimenting. The development of body groomers/manscapers helped the process along and we fairly rapidly evolved to a small landing strip (her preference) or bald (my preference). When some pubes started coming in grey, my wife was having none of that, and so we are both now bald whenever we are going to be nude in public.

Bald has one big disadvantage - the maintenance time and the stubble that appears after a few days, but the advantages are many. We are both exhibitionists, so being bald means that others can see every intimate detail if they care to look. Bald also greatly enhances oral sex, we both think we are more sensitive when there is no hair to get in the way. The hair is still present in other areas, but short enough that it gives a more pleasing appearance than when I had a hairy body and a bald pubic area, and the full body manscaping only needs to be done every2-3 weeks, with shaving every 2-3 days. It all comes down to personal preference, no right or wrong, but that is what works for us.
