Pre-1920s Wet Wool Bathing Suits
2 Attachment(s)
Before Jantzen Corporation invented a fabric specifically designed for swimsuits (and also invented the term swimsuit), women and men wore woolen 'bathing costumes" that would cling to the body when wet. Are there any more examples such as these two photos? I am specifically looking for wet suits that are clinging to the female wearers' bodies.

1920 Arrests

A group of women on a New Jersey beach were arrested in 1920 (presumably for indecent exposure). They don't look too distressed, so this could be a staged event.

German Cadets
I once read an article (no pictures) about Germany during the time around the First World War. The author was telling of a picture that he had seen of German military cadets having a swimming competition nude. The audience included the wives of the academy instructors.

50 Years of Female Swimsuits
1 Attachment(s)
A lot of changes in the 50 years from 1875 to 1927. I heard that mixed gender nudity was fairly prevalent in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Finland way before mixed gender nudity arrived in North America.

Mixed Gender Nudity
The Europeans, Aussies, Kiwis were/are definitely ahead of North Americans when it comes to mixed gender nudity.
I previously mentioned the mixed gender pool that I occasionally visited when I lived in another Canadian city. I only knew about it when I mentioned to a female classmate that I was bummed that I could only swim 3 maybe 4 months a year outdoors before the weather got too cold. She said she could invite me as a guest to a place where they had an indoor pool. It turned out that the place was owned and operated by a European couple and almost all the patrons were Polish, Russian, German, Brits, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, etc. This place closed a few years ago. I heard the couple sold the place to a devoloper who tore down the old building and built a condo. |

1916 and 1920 Summer Olympics
The 1916 Summer Olympics in Berlin were cancelled due to the Firs World War.
The 1920 Summer Olympics were held in Antwerp. Google image search turned up some interesting images of the women swimmers and divers, but they were all thumbnails, alas. |
