Hollywood - 50s-Early 60s
 

A rather sweet scene from the UK film During One Night (1960), starring a young Susan Hampshire in her first ever nude scene, and one of her earliest roles - some years before she found fame in The Forsyth Saga in 1967, or to American audiences in The Three Lives of Thomasina in 1963. In it she played a shy barmaid who helps a US airman who has gone AWOL who is sexually frustrated, and her nude scene involves her undressing in a barn before coming out to show herself to him. It's a little known film, but one of the first in the UK to show nudity, and Susan herself bares her bottom and a side glimpse of breast. She's rumoured to of done other nude scenes later in her career (such as Paris in August (1965), Malpertuis (1971), Mortal Sin (1972) and Neither the Sea or the Sand (1972)) but all are unconfirmed, unlike here. I have however also included a pic she seems to of posed for in a magazine when she was young, baring her breast, just for completeness sake.

I'm All Right, Jack (1959)
 

In one of the early films to involve nudity in British cinema is I'm All Right, Jack from 1959, which was a huge hit, and 2nd only to Carry on Nurse at the Box Office. It was a cracking film, but what may of added to the attraction were the scenes at the start and end of the film in a nudist colony, where Ian Carmichael goes to recuperate. While tame by today's standards (though the way things are going, maybe not so), there is a particular scene at the end of the film where a group of women try to persuade Carmichael to come and play tennis with them. There are a number of bare bottoms (and even a couple of boobs) on show as when he tries to resist the women come in to get him, leading to him to flee the camp with the naked ladies hot on his tail - something even Benny Hill never got away with!

Victoria Horne - The Scarlet Claw (1945)
 

This clip comes from one of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films of the 1940's, The Scarlet Claw, and features Victoria Horne as a housekeeper to a colonel they go to visit. Later Holmes discovers her tied up and shut in a cupboard, but what is a bigger surprise is just how see through Victoria's nightie is when Holmes is untying her hands from behind her back! It certainly gives a glimpse of Miss Horne's "star talents", that's for sure! If this had been earlier, I would of put this in the Pre-Code Hollywood thread, but this film came a decade after the code ended, which is why it is in here. Needless to say, I've slowed it down so you can judge for yourself just how revealing that nightdress is.

It was only Victoria's 3rd film role, but the moguls must of seen enough to give her a chance. Now best remembered for her role as Myrtle May in Harvey (1950), by which time her hair had gone blonde. She retired from acting in 1959, but lived until 92, passing away in 2003.

Sandra Horne & Pamela Law - Devil Doll (1964)
 

This video comes from the 1964 UK film Devil Doll, and considering the age of the film it is surprising the amount of nudity involved in it. It's a film about a dodgy stage hypnotist who also has a ventriloquist act with a doll that may or may not be possessed of evil spirits, and sees at least 3 nude scenes involving Sandra Dorne, Pamela Law and Trixie Dallas. This video sees scenes from the 1st two, with Dorne playing the stage assistant of Bryan Halliday's hypnotist, leading a girl on stage in a thong costume, then another scene where she is seen topless when she turns over when asleep on the sofa. Dorne had been a Post war actress from the 1940's in B features. The scene involving Pamela Law sees her come out of the bathroom while her lover/boyfriend is on the phone topless and in just her knickers. It's a nice scene, especially considering this was only 1964! Law had previously appeared in the film The Small World of Sammy Lee in 1963, but sadly nothing after this.

Hollywood - 50s-Early 60s
 

This clip is remarkably from 1954 and stars the beautiful Susan Stephen, a UK star of the 1950's. She had a perky beguiling charm, and in 1954 she found herself appearing in the film Golden Ivory (known in the USA as Outlaw Safari and shot in colour). To appeal to a certain 'continental' market (and to boost what is a rather dull film otherwise), the film makers included a scene where Susan had a dip in the river. Although wearing a nightdress, it becomes VERY apparent when she gets out of the water that she isn't wearing a bra, and leaves nothing to the imagination for viewers! Ironically when it was bought 3 years later by American International Pictures and re-released as White Huntress as part of a double bill exploitation feature with the film Naked Africa in 1957, it was trimmed down and released in B&W, so the more revealing version is actually the US colour version!

It's not the only film where Susan reveals more of her attributes than expected. In the film Father's Doing Fine in 1952, and then aged 21, she played a melodramatic teenage wannabe actress, and in skin tight trousers it looks very much as if she is wearing a thong underneath! As morals changed for society so did the loosening of movie standards, The code still existed but by the late 50s you can start to find movies with more instances of the stuff we love.

Surrender Hell 1959 WWII movie about the fighting in the Phillipines.

One scene a woman has her dress ripped off trying to run away from a soldier.

Another clip (no nudity) has a woman dump cold water on a guy taking a shower. Their expression exchange is funny. I think the guy realized he had shrinkage and she takes a quick glance to check!

Felicity Kendal - The Mayfly and the Frog (1966)
 

I mentioned yesterday that I'd come across an account on You tube that had a stash of old TV stuff from the past, so here is one of them. This is a drama from The Wednesday Play, which ran from 1964 to 1970, and was a ground breaking anthology series in it's time. This episode is called The Mayfly and the Frog (1966), and involves no less than a very young Felicity Kendal (yes, her from 70's sitcom The Good Life). I doubt many people know that Felicity actually did a nude scene in her acting career, but she did, and it was in this drama. She played a girl whose scooter is damaged by John Gielgud's Rolls Royce and is so enraged she breaks into his house in order to get compensation for the damage, refusing to go until she does. What involves is a clash of class, but also a developing love between Gielgud's flippant and crusty millionaire and Kendal's bolshy, perky and unmaterialistic biker. It's actually quite an enjoyable watch, but her crucial scene involving Felicity comes at about 41 mins into the drama, when she runs off in the house and Gielgud goes looking for her, only to find that she's stripped off and lying naked in his indoor pond! Nudity was quite rare on TV in the 1960's - the earliest nude was in anthology series Festival in 1963, and that was accidental! - but you get to see Felicity topless lying back, and her bottom when she sits up and swims over towards Gielgud. You also get to see brief breast shots during her talk with him, as Gielgud refuses to leave when she wants to get out, before his servant brings in a towel for her to wrap round. It may not be explicit stuff compared to modern standards, but I'm sure many of you would be interested to see Felicity in the buff as she was starting out in her acting career. Oh, and I've slowed it at the end for those who wished a better look at Miss Kendall. Enjoy.

The actress is Shirley Eaton, best known for the early Carry Ons and the gold painted victim in Goldfinger, and still going strong today. Never seen this before, so a nice surprise. Thanks for the upload!

Early 60s nudity goes more mainstream in US cinema with Monroe, Mansfield and Van Doren. Of course 'something has to give' was never completed and Mansfield was the first to the big screen. I dont think I have ever seen these movies in their unedited versions.

-In the climax one guy has killed the other and is chasing Kate around the house. She climbs into the pool to hide with a brilliant underwater shot of her dress flying up to show off her panties (Many Wetlook fans are born).
-Her husband comes to save her and as she climbs out of the pool her dress has completely fallen to reveal her wet dress and panties (oversized but sexy)

The start of the 'nudie roughies'. Much better production than the nudie cuties of the late 50s early 60s. Simple enough plot. An innocent girl gets lured into posing for a photographer only to be blackmailed into doing more and more lurid stuff. Not sure how widely these were distributed but must have been ahead of its time with implied **** and whipping and nudity. Funny how the movie starts out not showing much only bried nips here and there but by the end we have three naked women on screen.

-Brief nips in 2 scenes
-Good girl gets tricked into posing nude and her face is caught on film
-Brief bush shown on screen
-3 nude posing (interesting how some of it filmed blurred maybe a self censoring for certain markets)

Funny thing about this move is it only runs a little over an hour and about 30 minutes in it repeats about 10 minutes of footage. I wonder if that is the way it played in the movies..

Following on from the theme of nudity before the Hayes Code was officially abolished in the late 1960's, here is some unlikely nudity in the British film Joey Boy from 1965. Starring a host of British star names at that time, including Harry H. Corbett, Reg Varney and Stanley Baxter (still going at nearly 98), the plot saw a group of crooks conscripted into the army instead of jail during WWII as punishment. However, they still find ways of bending the rules and one of their ploys is to run the army club for the troops - only this club is more like the strip clubs they used to run in the East End! However, what they don't expect is their superiors (John Arnitt, Thorley Walters & Derek Nimmo) to pay a surprise call to check the place out after hearing officials are coming to visit. Oh dear! Sadly I don't know the names of the ladies on show, but among the flesh on display is a possible flash from the girl making out with Reg Varney when the officers enter, plus the "Loves of the Famous" show where only pasties spare the blushes of the girls on show there.

Shelley Martin - The Nudist Story (1960)
 

This film I came across just by chance when TalkingPicturesTV in the UK broadcast it a few weeks ago. Originally it was from a documentary on the film studio Danziger that I actually knew of it's existance and what is remarkable about this is that it included genuine aspiring English actresses, rather than nudists to play the roles. The film was The Nudist Story (also known as Pussycat's Paradise, and For Members Only in the USA) from 1960 and it is a time capsule of sweet gentile British films on the tail end of the 1950's (oh, if only they'd got Susan Stephen for the part!). As it is, the actress cast for the lead role was Shelley Martin in what was her first - and seemingly only - role.

To give the jist of the plot, Shelley played a prim uptight woman who inherited her grandfather's fortune and land, one of which she discovers is a nudist camp whose lease grandfather has failed to renew. She is horrified when one of the men from the nudist camp, Brian Cuddy, turns up (clothed, I may add) to ask her to extend their license, only for her to refuse. However, he asks he to at least look at the place and judge for herself and despite her misgivings she goes and begins to change her mind - partly due to the fact she secretly fancies him.

There is a lot of nudity for a film of this age, and a genuine mainstream film at that. So much so I decided to compile separate videos of the three main actresses who bare all on here - Shelley Martin, Carol Sutton and Jacqueline D'Orsay - as well as a video of clips of the other naked extras. Shelley Martin is first and she totally fits the prim English rose role in this. There is one scene when she first goes to the nudist camp where she asks Brian Cuddy if she will have to take her clothes off. Oh yes, she will and she does and the nervousness when she first undresses is beautifully judged. What is also enjoyable is knowing from an interview with Brian Cuddy that all of the cast tried to keep it quiet on their CV that they had ever done this film, due to their embarrassment of the nudity. As a film itself, it may be dated but it is beautifully sweet and old fashioned, and it makes seeing actresses from the tail end of the 1950's baring all in an era when they would never of expected to do so.

Carol Sutton - The Nudist Story (1960)
 

The second actress to disrobe for the mainstream British film The Nudist Story (1960) is Carol Sutton, a sweet redhead who also made her debut here and like poor Shelley Martin never got any further in her acting career. Or maybe they were so embarrassed they dared not audition for other work lest they should be recognized? They shouldn't of been, as Carol clearly shows her talents here (so to speak) as the "good girl" nudist. There were other nude scenes of her in the Shelley Martin section, but this contains her separate nude scenes and shows her as a marked contrast with her petite and small statistics to the more volumptuous Shelley Martin that highlights the different shapes and sizes in the film (though they are nearly all young, it seems). I felt it better to do these videos separate as to upload all the scenes in one video would either of taken an age or might of passed the 1GB of file size that I could upload. Besides, for fans of Carol and of redheads, you can view her in her own little video. She really should of got more roles - let's face it, if you are prepared to bare all for a role back in those days you deserve a break. Sadly it was't forthcoming for either Carol or Shelley, but at least we have these videos to admire their talents in.

Jacqueline D'Orsay - The Nudist Story (1960)
 

The 3rd main actress who appeared in The Nudist Story is Jacqueline D'Orsay, a French actress who unlike the other two ladies had actually appeared in other things before doing this, such as in the BBC Sunday Night Theatre drama The Makepeace Story (1955) and the TV sitcom Double Cross in 1956. However this was probably her biggest part (no pun intended) as she bared off for her art as the "bad girl" who fancies Brian Cuddy and is none too pleased when he falls for prim posh Shelley Martin and tries to put a spanner in the works (sounds painful, I know). Interestingly looking at Jacqueline's figure she looks as if she has breast implants - either that or she was unusually shaped! Surely breast implants weren't around then?

My final video compilation from The Nudist Story (1960), a genuine mainstream British film from that era and featuring genuine actresses having to bare all way before any actress would of expected to do so, these feature the extras who appeared in the film. Whether they themselves were nudists or some aspiring actress hoping to make it in the film industry I don't know, but I thought that members on here would like to see them anyway. As mentioned, most of the main cast were so embarrassed about doing this they often avoided including this on their CV, but viewed today - and if you are lucky to find a copy of the film online, check it out - it is rather a sweet if dated film that is reminiscent of old British films of the 1950's. It just makes fascinating viewing seeing such actresses of that period appearing naked, with all their gentile clipped accents. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the videos.
