sometimes with a broken movie file, it will rename the file extension because it was not save properly. If that is the case, you could try renaming the extension manually, but you will need to alter the viewing details in the folder first, to show file extensions. failing that, ty using a porgram like formatfactory, to convert the media into a different format.
hope this helps.

What format is it currently?

Like CP said, Filefactory should be able to convert it into something playable for you.

First thing, get it off the phone and onto a pc.

Then give it an extension ( eg mpg, mp4 ) if it is missing one, or it might have a temporary one.
You will need to know what the correct extension is by comparing it to something from your device that recorded correctly.

VLC player on Windows will play broken files, it will ask if you want to repair it, I always say no.

Goog luck.

ok so i tried adding an extension and it didnt do anything, and it is an mp4 i checked under the properties i guess now ill try other video players or formatfactory

ok now i tried vlc player and as soon as it starts to play it stops it doesnt give me an error or anything like that it just stops, then i tried format factory and it gave me this message Error 0x1:Incorrect Function.

Have you Googled or even tried tools like " Video Repairer" yet?

I understand your frustration, I have some video of an ex which was captured 10+ years ago on a camcorder and then imported onto the PC using Hauppauge capture card using a strange codec. This meant I could not play it on recent pc's or macs

I ran the video though some expensive transcoding software and it fixed the problem for me.

What ever you do - keep a backup on an external device, in case you corrupt the original any further.

yea i tried a bunch of programs before posting here but no luck.. that is definitely great advice though i will make a backup before tinkering with the file any further

If you've had no luck re-formatting it or converting it, and VLC doesn't want to play ball I'd maybe try KM Player. It plays broken files as well and seems to cover more extensions than VLC.

The only other thing I could suggest is uploading it and letting someone else have a try.
