This is the portrait by Aleah Chapin entitled Auntie which has won this year's BP portrait award - see its not just us on OCC that look at naked older women!!! Porn or Art - Art or Porn? What do you think? If you want to see it, it's in the National Portrait gallery (London for you non Brits) from the 21st of June.

Please leave your views and comments

I hope...

When I get to be that age, that my wife will still look as good. Something about her look. I don't know if it's her facial expression, or her breasts, or the way she covers herself. Makes me want to wrap one arm around her waist, and one around her shoulders and just hold her.
I say it's art. I like it.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

Art gives me a rise in my mind and soul. Porn gives me a rise in my pants.

This is art.

Compare "Auntie" to Lucian Freud's "Benefits Supervisor Resting" - what do you prefer?

DRDavenport 06-20-2012 10:14 PM

Lucien Freud makes every woman look ugly.

Sparky 45 06-21-2012 11:37 AM

Ummm, lemme think....

I didn't want to be the one to say it but, that second pic is not so pretty.

Well - pretty was never Freud's style - wait for this

Another painting of the same woman: Benefits Supervisor Sleeping sold for -----wait for it------

The painting held the world record for the highest price paid for a painting by a living artist, of US$33.6 million (£17.2 million).

Is she a bit prettier now?

If contemporary art doesn't do it for you - what about Victorian erotica -

Looks French 19th century but probably all European art at the time was like this- do you know anything about the painting?

Sparky 45 06-23-2012 04:22 PM

People who know...

There are a lot of people on OCC that know more about art than I do. Maybe they could answer. The term 'reubenesque' refers to women who are shaped similarly to the gal in the last pic. When did Reubens paint and where was he from? Bonus question: When did women with an ample figure go out of style? (I think they're fabulous!)

Rubens was a Dutch/Flemish painter of the 17th century - this is the 3 graces which shows full-bodied women style. Not sure when skinny women become fashionable - for some of us they never have. If you like real women check out a couple of my threads;

There are other art traditions that are clearly more erotic

Sparky 45 06-30-2012 02:17 PM

I never knew...

That looking at naked ladies on the internet would be so educational! I've learned about Mormon undies, WNBR, The Tool, and now, I'm learning about art! I would love to have been the male model for that particular piece!

On a personal note, Rand, I already follow your threads. I find that we have very similar tastes. Thanks for all the pretties and the smarts!

At what point does things stop being erotic and become pornographic? Or is it all defined by wider society?

Some cartoons I came across which I think are quite amusing.

Sparky 45 07-17-2012 12:05 PM

Just my opinion.

I think pornography IS erotic. Where does art cross the line into porn? That, I don't know. I think it depends on the intent of the image. If the intent is to simply admire the beauty of a naked body, then it's art. If the intent is to make you horny, then it's porn. That doesn't mean that art can't be arousing, or that porn isn't artistic. It's a really fuzzy line. The instinct to reproduce hasn't diminished one little bit since cavemen. The stimulus that triggers it seem to be primarily visual for most men, and cerebral for women. Foreplay with the lights on? Everyone's a winner!

No problem Fango - it has sort of morphed into a general erotic drawing/painting thread.

Erotic painting with a classical theme was all the rage in the late 19th century - these pictures were copied in early erotic photographs as we can see here.

The pictures are the Harem bath & A favourite Custom - you can see how the photographer tried to follow the idea of what was acceptable to a gentleman at the time

Hans Baldung

This drawing by Hans Baldung, circa 1515 was supposedly quite controversial for the period and early Christians. The print is called 'Accepting the Dragon's Fire' and has dark implications. The artist was born in 1484, the year Pope Innocent the VIII launched the Inquisition.

Pop art meets porn:

Jeff Koons married Hungarian/Italian porn actress Cicciolina (llona Staller) he created the Made in Heaven series - much of which he later destroyed on their divorce. Cicciolina not only became an Italian politician and member of the Italian Parliament where she infamously would give speeches with a breast exposed. Can you imagine that in the House of Commons or the House of Representatives!!??

Sparky 45 07-27-2012 06:22 PM

I like the glass ones.

There aren't many in Congress or House of Representatives that I'd want to see naked.

I like this one. You don't usually see tits that perky in a painting. LOL :p

Thanks

Fango

Sparky 45 07-30-2012 01:16 AM

I like the third one.

The one with her eyes closed. I can almost hear her soft voice saying, "Mmmm!" As though she were hearing a favorite piece of music, or her lover's voice.

He also produced some very large photographs of him fucking her. The, during the divorce, he condemned her for consorting with pornographers!
I guess a pic of a couple fucking in a $5 magazine is porn, but a $50K picture of the same is art.
