I usually use a Panasonic long zoom bridge camera for shooting this kind of pictures. It's nice, because the zoom mechanism is completely internal, so you can not say if I'm taking panorama or tele shots. So if someone asks me about what I'm photograping, I can say that I'm just taking a nice panorama of the marketplace or so. It does have a whopping 420mm (35mm equivalent) zoom, so that really makes nice closeups, and it has a optical image stabilizer, so I can shoot without any support. Only thing that bothers me is high noise in pictures, and it can not be corrected much without losing a quite bit of detail.

Yes, they're far more interesting with faces, but it's also a legal question. Even if the pictures are taken in a public place, it's prohibited to publish them if people are recognizable, which means that i have to blur them. There's a similar issue in g**gle maps street view, that's why their faces are blurred.

I have a Canon that produces a lot of noise under zoom low light levels. I read and tried setting the iso to as low as it will go (for me 80). doesn't get rid of all the noise, but helps..

Yeah, I've done the same. That's why I shoot only in sunny days, otherwise the shutter time would be too long and subjects will be either blurry because of motion or noisy as hell. Obviously dslr is out of the question, it attracts too much attention. People are less afraid of small toyish camera than professional looking dslr with a massive external zoom lens. Besides, photoshop can in fact reduce noise pretty well, so I'll be shooting this kind of pictures with my trusty old small superzoom probably as long as it works.

Bravo! Excellent contributions! :D:D

Nice start. A DSLR does not attract too much attention if you're in a tourist area as you appear to be. Everything I've shot, Andy's shot and Jay's shot have been on DSLRs. And I think most of Spud's too. (If you don't know who Andy is, most of the best sitting upskirts on this site were taken by him.) Lenses attract much more attention than bodies. A compact zoom lens on a DSLR will not attract undue attention as there are so many of them out there these days. Behavior is much more important than camera size.

Until you decide to use a flash, you should learn how to use spot metering and exposure compensation. We don't care if the highlights on someone's thighs are a bit blown out if the panties are properly exposed. And if you have normally steady hands, focal length should about equal exposure time to avoid effects of lens shake. Adjust ISO and aperture to get there. Image stabilization will give you about another stop to play with. You should never, ever use automatic exposure mode.

If you're willing to take the risk, there's no reason to not get the technically best shots you can.

orcher 11-08-2011 04:30 PM

I've tried to take some pictures with my dslr there, but it immediately draws attention and people are always asking what kind of photos I take. Because here dslr almost immediately translates to a professional or at least some kind of journalist. Almost no tourists carry dslr, only small pocket cameras.

I shot with fully manual exposure, camera is absolutely too slow to capture quick situations with automatic exposure modes. And if the sun is blocked or suddenly shines and I don't have time to adjust exposure or aperture to more suitable for the situation, pictures are too dark or blown out. And only usable iso-sensitivity for my nimble superzoom is 80 or max 100.

Understand the issue. Sucks to have great opportunities missed through equipment.

Well you've pretty much shot the legality thing all ready by shooting up skirts.
Many places in the US all ready have specific up skirt laws in place and they are harsh ... really harsh.
It completely overrides any other rights you have regarding taking pics in a public place. All they have to prove is the focus of you mission was to shoot women's panties and your toast.

So take care and please don't get caught. I enjoy the pics even blurred. As a safety measure in case you do get busted I hope that you don't have a single pic of anyone under 18 on your hard drive with legs spread.
That would spell big trouble .... see you on the news kind of trouble.

orcher 12-30-2011 01:28 PM

Thank god, I don't live in the US. But yeah, I immediately delete pictures if there's a single doubt that the subject is under 18. After all, I'm more into milfs. :D I actually can not see those people until I zoom in.

I've been saying that here for years.
You do NOT want to even TRY doing this in a Mall or a Food Court - they have security that is looking specifically for folks doing this, and if you are in a park, they also may have folks looking for you. Chances are, wherever you are, there is a security camera on you, no matter where you are.

You do not want to be caught, and have to register as an RSO, if that happens your life is OVER.
I may look, but I don't shoot, never ever never, too much to lose.

orcher 12-31-2011 08:51 PM

That's why you should have a backup plan. Look for a places with no security cameras (yes, there still are that kind of places, especially in eastern europe) and have another memory card with typical tourist scenery pictures, which you can change in if there's a slighthest chance of getting caught.

Besides, have you ever wondered why most of those voyeur/upskirt pictures come from russia and eastern europe? Things are still more relaxed here about these kind of things. Although, there's a slight change in atmosphere about this, I think that in ten years time, voyeurism will suffer a lot and it'll become such a infrigment of law like some inappropriate pictures of underage people.

But let's not make this thread about discussion of legal issues. Where ever I shoot, legality of my actions is not a problem. Just enjoy, I make it possible for you.

I agree to a certain extent that behavior is more important than camera size, but you're still holding a large camera in your hand and you're pointing it directly at someone. I've never had a SLR, but I played with a bridge camera, which looks like a cheap mini slr, and I can tell you that I had men and women looking at me constantly, and I wasn't even pointing the camera in their direction. A small camera phone also draws a ton of attention if you're shooting with it. The simple act of holding something in your hand and bringing it up to take a photo will draw eyes. The only thing most people don't appear to pay much attention to are camcorders for whatever reason. It's almost as if they dismiss it as a recording device. I can't imagine you're not attracting attention to yourself. Let's not also forget that the smaller the lens the closer you have to get to the subject, and the closer you get the louder that shutter sounds gets :).

I've haven't even seen a live upskirt in ages much less taken a picture of one, but I think it's ok as long as it's in a public. Like if a girl is just sitting on steps and you take her picture. I'm sure some copy somewhere will attempt to arrest you or do something to you, but I am not aware of any law against this.

As for the 18 and over rule, I don't know about you, but I see endless 18 year olds that look like they're 16. The reason why I know this is because there's a college dormitory near where I live and I see a constant stream of this girls coming and going from there, who really don't look 18 at all, but they must be if they're attending college right? Strange, I don't remember them being that young looking when I was 18.

You better read up on the laws, being 'in public' makes no difference if the intent is there. You know how the legal system is, supposedly you cannot take pics of people on private property, but how does the papparazzi in hollywood get away with it?
All you have to do is get caught in the wrong circumstances and you are toast. Age means nothing - you can argue all day long you thought that 16 yr old was 18 or older - there are gals that have fake ID that says they are 20-22-24 - it doesn't matter - you are somehow just supposed to 'know' if someone is underage or not. Look at Laurance Taylor the football player - he was convicted of sex assault on a minor even though that minored testified she told him she was 22 and had fake ID that said the same (she was 15 or 16). Still, Taylor got screwed.
Like you guys, I know some 16 yr olds that can pass for 22-24 all day long. It doesn't matter.
Beyond that, age means nothing with upskirting and the law, you just get charged with a few more things if they are under age.
