The one time I actually watched none of this contest this happens...
Hmmm...
Well, someone has to have a clip of this right?

Oh, and to answer the 'American Idol' question.
Well, no... This is nothing like American Idol (other than that it involves music.)
The Eurovision Song Contest is a contest in which every European country (and for some reason Israel also...) gets to send a song to compete with the ones from the other European countries.
It happens just once a year and is watched by hundreds of millions worldwide.
Therefor there has to exist a clip of this somewhere...

Great pics though!!

Not really. Every European country has its own American Idol.
In the European Song Contest all Eurpean countries sing against each others.
But I'm not really fan of this stuff, it became to political over the last years.
Maybe someone else wants to explain it more detailed.
I'm more interested if anyone has the video to this thumbs?

That is just so funny to read.

I think the whole *idol thing was exported to the states. Each country usually has about 3 of these type of shows.

Pop Idol, Fame Academy and such like, they are usually renamed as they get exported - but share the same rules and graphics.

Didn't all this 'Idol buisness start in England with pop Idol?
Same with big brother and other such shows.

Anyway first post, Time to stop lurking i think.
Thankyou Alex for a great site!

More about Eurovision than you really wanted to know.

The Eurovision Song Contest has been going on for decades; if the question were rephrased as "is American Idol a bit like Eurovision?" then it'd be slightly more accurate.

As a previous poster noted, countries in the final round (yes, Eurovision ranks eligible countries in a league system) hold competitions of some sort to pick a representative act. In the finals each act performs their number, then the viewiers in each country vote for their favourite song, these votes are tallied and points are awarded by each country. Thus Sweden might give 1 point to England, 2 to Italy, etc. Countries can't vote for themselves, but over the years Eurovision has become a bit of a joke due to countries voting for their neighbours. To continue the example, Sweden would probably give 10 points (the biggest award) to Norway.

Eurovision is known as a venue for trashy, easily disposable pop songs, that rarely become... well... popular. Very few genuinely famous acts have performed at the event. I can think of five, of which only two*; ABBA and Celine Dion could be called world famous. Most sink back into well deserved obscurity.

* Katrina and the Waves, Bucks Fizz, Tatu are the other Eurovision performers i can name.

Celine Dion...

This is something I always found funny about the Eurovision song contest. Celine Dion won for Switzerland but is not Swiss, she's Canadian.

Yes, Canadians have to take responsibility for her...and we are very sorry to the world. (We are also sorry for Bryan Adams, Shania Twain and Alanis Morrisette too.)

Cheers!
