A tribute to Nambassa - rock festivals 1969-1981
 

It might not seem worth it to devote an entire thread to the Nambassa Music Festival, held in NZ from 1976-1981. However, a little digging has revealed some intriguing info and pics. What I learned is that in 1979, it is estimated that 75,000 attended, and that 35% were partially or totally naked. Does that include shirtless males? Look at the pics below and be the judge. If not, I doubt that any other major music festival in history could boast that much nudity. What all this means is that ordinary pics taken at Nambassa have a high potential to include some female skin. These pics are out there on the net, and below are a few i unearthed today. All are low quality unfortunately which is to be expected, but they are still noteworthy. So I will open this thread up to any and all pics from Nambassa that anyone can dig up and that show, however faintly, some female nudity. And it is my hope that at some point, someone will unearth a cache of higher Q pics that will make all of this effort truly worthwhile. If you weren't able to attend this feast of flesh, you can at least have this thread, my tribute to Nambassa. Woodstock may be the granddaddy of rock music festivals, but Nambassa would appear to be the crowd fav at OCC.

Also, recollections from anyone from this festival would be nice to have. There was a lot of skinny dipping as you can see, and communal showers too. What else...?

I may expand this to include all retro rock festival pics because as I've been looking for Nambassa pics, I've also run across some other stuff. There were a lot of festivals back in the period 1969-1981 or so that deserve checking. Names like Isle of Wright, Vortex 1, Strawberry Fields, retro Roskilde, Sweetw*ter, more...

this is a new Woodstock '69 pic I found yesterday. Down in the hardcore section, nakedhippie has been posting a lot of pics from these festivals, and I've posted many myself repeatedly over the years. I don't mean to rain on his thread, but it is not as accessible being in the hardcore section where threads get buried very quickly. So, this is my retro rock festival thread. Stay tuned. My hope is that nakedhippie will contribute pics here and check this regularly. I decided just now to make one thread for all retro festival pics, and this is it..before finding the Nambassa pics above, I wouldn't have said there were enough pics for a thread all its own. an interesting thing to try is to go to Google and type in a year like "1970" then add "naked". that got me this curious pic that looks like a festival but there is no info. Glastonbury? Who knows...

excellent pic from Glastonbury, which may have been called the "glastonbury fair" back in the seventies. Also, Knebworth was held in the UK.

want to see some really cool pics, not festival nudity really but related, Google "Hawkwind" and "Stacia". Here is a sample pic. It seems there was in the '70's a space rock band called Hawkwind whose lead singer took to performing nude. I have never heard of this. Lots of great pics if you google those words. The tie in to this thread I guess is that they did perform at Glastonbury (although not nude I don't think).

here are my misc (many unkown) retro rock festival nudes in thumbnails. I also have woodstock, Glastonbury, Roskilde, Watkins Glen and Goose Lake pics in other folders. The Goose Lake pics came from Hooterhistorian and are from 1970.

Many of these pics are copyrighted and include ones I just linked to today from Strawberry Fields. Getty Images is a great source for these as I have already shown. Included in the thumbs below is also a set from Coccozella's from an unknown 1970s era festival.

I'm also really intrigued by pics from the Isle of Wright festival in 1970 or so. One pics shows a very large group of naked and semi naked people on a beach where there was mass skinny dipping and standing around. Getty has it.

cool pic from the ngaruawahia festival, which I learned was also held in New Zealand. Ngaruawahia probably is an indian word meaning "land where the naked roam" or something :)

I haven't done much with this thread, but once upon a time I wanted to try and get all of the retro festival pics in one place. Here are some more from my collection, festival name unknown. If anyone wants to contribute info/pics, I would love it. Getty has a lot of images that I can't post. Coccozella has some too. And then there are the pics from Watkins Glen, NY in the 1970's which have been, like many of these above, posted probably several times now in other threads.

Do not forget the Mariposa festival in Toronto. I attended as a small child in the late sixties, with my hippie parents. There was some nudity as I recall.

It is funny that the over-zealous OCC censor program censors Sweet Water in Klondike's posts. Hopefully I tricked it by adding the space.

Ngaruawahia is a small town in the north island of New Zealand, where i am from. Can't say i remember this particular festival but it is a little before my time.

Thylejren, also known as Frøstruplejren is an alternative living festival in Denmark that started in 1970. It has evolved into an intentional community as well. Nudity seems to be common.

I did not know about this - this is pretty cool. Read on:

The Powder Ridge Rock Festival was scheduled to be held July 31, August 1 and August 2, 1970 at Powder Ridge Ski Area in Middlefield, Connecticut. A legal injunction forced the event to be canceled, keeping the musicians away; but a crowd of 30,000 attendees[1] arrived anyway, to find no food, no entertainment, no adequate plumbing, and at least seventy drug dealers. William Manchester wrote: "Powder Ridge was an accident waiting to happen, and it happened."[2] Volunteer doctor William Abruzzi declared a drug "crisis" on 1 August and said "Woodstock was a pale pot scene. This is a heavy hallucinogens scene."[3]

pretty sad, or funny, depending on your point of view. So I guess those that went found that there was not much to do except maybe get naked. Oh well, lets just have some sex then and go home....:)

The second link posted above has quite a few naked pics. They are not copyrighted but a notice appears on the website not to distribute them. They have historical significance and so they should not be reposted.

here is a partial list of bands that were suppose to play at Powder Ridge until the event was canceled. Police patrolled the roads leading to the area, telling people the festival would not go on. It didn't work. 30,000 showed up anyway and many got naked. Just see if you can spoil our fun!

my god, what a line up! :)

30 of the 48 music festivals scheduled for 1970 were cancelled, mostly due to local opposition. CIA snoops frequented these festivals, and considered them to be not much different than anti-war protests. To them it was all civil unrest. But nakedness and sunshine and non stop music from some of the biggest names in rock - man, how can anyone top that?
