I was just thinking recently of the great ENF scenes from the Archie comics I read in the 1970s. This page reminds me of one where Veronica buys a portable cabana so she can change right on the beach, and ends up wearing just the cabana. She must have been changing for some sort of photo shoot because there's a photographer at the end saying he's got his next cover photo as Ronnie is mortified.
There was also a story (this one may have been Josie and the Pussycats) where several young women are getting ready to do some swimsuit modeling at the beach for a commercial or something. The bad girl decides the good girl's bikini is cuter and switches hers for it. With the cuter bikini she is a big hit, until they all go into the water. The bad girl decides to stay in the water instead of leaving with everyone else. The good girl knew her suit would shrink to nothing if exposed to water, leaving bad girl basically naked. Those two scenes, plus Betty Cooper getting tied up by the kids she's baby-sitting, are my most enduring comic-book memories. |

The first image is from early in the "Archie" comics run from, (I think?) Jackpot Comics in early 1942. While Archie Comics the Company is synonymous with wholesome, family fare, the company's immediate predecessor, MLJ Comics, was a bit on the sleazy side, hence this image of barenekkid Veronica under the sun lamp.
The next two images are from the Archie newspaper strip from the autumn of 1946, where Betty, finding Archie knocked out in the locker room, strips off all her clothes so she can put on Archie's football uniform and take his place in the big homecoming game (which she WINS), then rushes back to put the uniform back on Archie before she's discovered (What a gal!!) |

Dan DeCarlo, the cartoonist, also did cartoons for Playboy and other "adult" publications. So, he liked to get Betty and Veronica naked.
