This is so much better than the embarrassing story I posted. And you know someone has to ask so I'll do it. Are there photos, more info, the guy's telephone number?? But in all seriousness, I never thought about the issue of stage nudity from a guys perspective. Gotta be odd.

KimL1983 11-15-2013 01:53 PM

That made me laugh. No, if I had all that info I would have posted it. Or dated the guy myself! Like i said, I graduated after that and didn't know the guy. But I'll dig and see what I can find! :D It's funny - I should have guessed mypost would get that attention but I really posted it to ask about "Hair" and what people are hearing about how that show is done now - nudity or not. And to get off my own chest (pun intended) the embarrassment of going naked myself.

Damn. I tried at least. I did find this: http://nypost.com/2002/11/06/naked-a...own-in-flames/. Looks like this guy was fired from a play for being too well endowed. I guess your friend isn't the only one, or maybe this is your friend!

I'd like to hear more about that. What was it like for you? Where were you on the stage? Was the lighting good enough for people to see you? How much did you show? Was there anyone you know in the audience?

KimL1983 11-16-2013 12:18 PM

Bacon, I tried to post a link to a discussion of Hair so you can understand why the nudity is there. But it says I have to make 10 posts before I can post links. There's a good description on this website called the Tribe Online. If you Google that and Hair nudity, you should see a description. That says the nudity is usually just 20-30 seconds during the final number of the first act. Every production can do it differently and ours lasted a bit longer and wasn't that dim, but maybe it just seemed tha tway to me. I was really nervous during dress rehearsals and the first night but then I realized we were all naked so nobody was really focused just on me. Like i said, that one actor drew all the attention away from everybody, so I was kinda thankful for that although I think it upstaged what was supposed to be a serious scene. It's all about the Vietnam War but all people remembered was a giant male body part. Yes I knew some people in the audience but I was cool with that. Plus I was graduating soon so I figured who cares. Im sure they were looking at the other cast members, not me.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but stuff like this fascinates me, and you seem pretty willing to talk about it.

Did you know there would be nudity when you auditioned for the play? I know Hair has a bit of a reputation, but as you said, some productions leave it out. How many people were on stage with you? What was it like during those dress rehearsals, and again on opening night? Did you go completely nude, or just topless?

Kim you can just edit the link. Replace http with like hxxp then you can just past it in your message.
I would think most people here have heard of Hair before but you never know.

Kim here, new member, longtime lurker thanks to crazy friends who introduced me to this site. (I need new friends. LOL). So this is fitting to this topic. Anyone familiar with the musical "Hair"? I was curious about what most colleges and community theaters do with the nudity at the end of the first act. It only lasts about a minute but it’s kinda important to the production. I may be involved with a community theatre production soon, so I want to find out what the current trend is. I think they are gonna decide to not do the nude scene.

However, I have an experience with the musical from about 10 years ago, when I was in a college production of it, and that did feature the nude scene. I was cast before we all knew if the nudity would get approved by the school. We honestly thought it wouldn’t so we were surprised when we were told after casting that the nude scene would be in. We were excited but I know for one I was nervous. I was very self-conscious about my looks back then, especially my chest, or total lack of one. I eventually got over that and it was a really freeing experience, so I have good memories. But the main memory I have from that production – and the thing everybody else remembers to – is one of the actors in the show. He was kind of a dorky freshman at the time and I didn’t know him. I only talked to him a few times during rehersals but I remember when they said we’d do the nude scene, he was nervous when all the other guys were like, yeah, this’ll be crazy and fun. We soon found out why he was nervus when we had our first dress rehearsal for the nude scene. Let’s just say that to this day I’ve never seen a larger penis ever – not in real life, not in porn, not in a zoo. That may sound like a joke but its not. It was so freakish that no one really knew what to say, and I know the director actually thought of either cancelling the plans to do the scene nude, or at least have him not appear in it. But because of the staging, there was no way for him to not be in the scene. It was either do the scene clothed for everyone or kick him out of the production. So it was decided to go ahead with it but have the actor stay toward the back if possible. That didn’t quite work so even though that scene is brief, it totally upstaged everything and even years later is a story that people still tel around campus apparently.

Yeah, I remember doing that play but was really nervous about doing the nude scene, for me I get camera or stage shy and I shrivelled up with fear, didn't help that I was standing next to a guy like the one you describe
He turned to me during the scene and whispered "don't worry, it's personality that counts"

Kimmler, that's too bad. It's a fun musical. If it makes you feel better, that was the reaction of all the guys in the musical when they saw that one actor. Like I mentioned in my first post, we werent sure whether it would contain nudity when we auditioned. We thought it wouldnt but we knew there was a chance. The first dress rehearsal was probably worse than the actual performance because there was no proper lighting. We were just all standing there exposed. It's complete nudity, not just topless, but its tastefully done. And no, Jenn, that's not the same guy. LOL

I agree, its a fun musical and I enjoyed my time in it apart from that scene, wow, they felt the same way too?
Yeah, think we all felt the same way towards him, we were like better not invite our girlfriends down to this as I didn't want to see that.
Oh at the the (un)dress rehearsal he got a lot of looks from the women. I agree that the nudity is tastefully done and I understand that it is not gratuitous.
But on the night I think I must have pissed him off as he said to me during the show to put me off!
