Don't forget Sony Action cams. Sony have made great strides in the last couple years, and their top end product is every bit the equal of the top end GoPro... image quality is excellent from both. All the other knock-off action cameras fall short in image quality, especially the cheap ones. You get what you pay for. In late 2015 / early 2016 the current top of the line units are the GoPro Hero4 Black and the Sony FDR-X1000. Both shoot 4K video (which is like an 8 megapixel still image when extracted), and 120fps slow motion in full HD, which is great for a walk-by shot (more FPS means more chance that the image will not have motion blur on the few select frames you are looking for). The Sony has Image Stabilization to smooth out camera shake (GoPro does not), but GoPro's menus are a little easier to navigate (both are somewhat arcane). Both support WiFi remote view on a smartphone, now more or less a universal feature on all action cams. Both manufacturers have their own unique shape, sometimes the GoPro is easier to hide, sometimes the Sony, just depends on what kind of device, pack, pouch, purse, whatever, that you are trying to mount it in. So if you are gearing up for summer 2016 with something new, consider how you plan to carry your candid shooting action cam, and whether you expect to shoot most of your footage while moving. In some cases, Sony might make more sense, in others, GoPro... good luck out there... |
