Many families....

When my wife and I visited nudist clubs across the U.S., all ASA which is now AANR clubs, families were the majority of the people there. Some grandparents brought both their children and grandchildren. Being nude was not the point, having fun was and most of the clubs have lots of activities not just volley ball, tennis and swimming. There are no strangers at a nudist club, everyone is very friendly and sociable. Maybe being nude makes you drop your restrictions and conditions. My wife, more athletic than I am, was very popular and was invited to join many events and I loved watching her. Even so, as I have written before, her favorite place was in the shared showers.

Unfortunately I did not get to practice nudism during its "Golden Age"; I started in the 90's, when family nudism was already on the decline. I can only imagine how great it was "back in the day." It seemed nudists had a lot more fun; at least judging from many of the vintage pics here and elsewhere. Probably activities were a higher priority at resorts back then.

The "smoothie movement" was on the rise during that time though; and it was fun seeing it catch on - much to the dismay and objections of older nudists who felt that a bald labia was too "provocative." My then-wife, who was aware shaving was a growing trend, decided to "buck convention" and shave bald; one of the few at the time at our home-resort. She instantly became popular lol! She didn't mind the attention though and ignored the "derogatory" looks she would sometimes get from other women.

These days, being smooth is not even a thing anymore. My current wife, who doesn't even ordinarily shave, will "clip off" before heading to the resort because she feels she "fits in" better with the crowd! Quite a change from the days where it was relatively uncommon.

Nudism is definitely changing though...less families. Less activities and fun. But a lot more shaven labias!

Nudism in the 90's

We began going to the closest nude beach with our kids in the late 90's. There were other families there and it was fun. Like going to vacation for the day. The each started to change about 5 years in and less families were showing up and as the kids got older we went less and less. I'd say half the women were shaved in the late 90's and by '05 almost all of the woman were shaved. My wife was always shaved and still does shave. Oddly though she shaved once early in our marriage but let it grow back and didn't permanently shave until we started going to the nude beach and got into "the lifestyle."

Yup, shaving and being a little more overt with female genitalia may have helped kill the family nudism movement. At least, both of you are observing that both trends occurred at the same time.

I also wanted to mention that I loved these contest photos with descriptions of contestants, years, etc. It's great when the photos set the context for what's going on.
