I couldn't agree more. I remember this scene like I saw it for the first time yesterday. Along with Beginner's Luck and the I Dream of Jeanie episode where Jeanie makes the other astronauts wives' clothes disappear, this was probably what got me into the EUF genre. The Queen Bee dynamic definitely adds some gas to the fire. All of my Danielle Parnell and Katherine Wray stories stem from this!! Thanks!!

It is a little hard to pin down, isn't it... I think it's the element of comeuppance, where the arrogant girls faces some sort of public humiliation for her attitude or actions. This usually involves ENF or EUF, but not always. It could involve some other type of outfit, costume, or clothing that the character considers embarrassing or unflattering. The girl is usually taken down a peg or two by her own behavior, but sometimes there are other circumstances... An alternate catalyst can involve a bumbling everyman whom the girl considers beneath her, yet he manages to put her in some humiliating predicament. "The Geisha Boy" (1958) comes to mind as a perfect example. Star Jerry Lewis causes arrogant and dismissive Marie McDonald to lose her dress and bump down a flight of airline stairs on her bottom in her just underwear. She ends up wrapped in a carpet in her lingerie. And all in front of a picture taking press core and the public at large. Laughing and delighted at the humiliating spectacle of course. Closely related to this is that there is usually a good girl/bad girl element. Our everyman is presented with two women whom he is interested in. To the audience the choice is obvious, but for the sake of the plot he doesn't realize it until the end. The "bad girl" is usually portrayed as a schemer, or arrogant, (or both) and her ultimate humiliation clears the way for the everyman and "good girl" to live happily ever after... Anyway, as some one mentioned in an earlier post, another such scene is from "A Guide For The Married Man" (1967). In it, Walter Matthau is being mentored by his worldly friend (Robert Morse of "Mad Men" fame) on how to conduct an affair behind his wife's back without getting caught. It's played for laughs and Matthau's character ultimately redeems himself by not going through with it because he realizes he loves his wife and family to much to risk it. The Morse character pays his own price as HE is caught cheating despite his elaborate planning and faces a ruinous divorce action. In the scene in question, Matthau takes Elaine Devry to a motel for his first attempt at cheating. Devry undresses to some slinky black lingerie. Already having second thoughts, the nervous Matthau is surprised to hear noise outside and it turns out his buddy Morse, in another room across the way has gotten caught. He quickly gathers Devry up, still in her underwear, and hustles out the door to his car before he is seen. Devry, in only a short fur coat and clutching her dress, her hair mussed, is forced to scrunch down on the floor boards in just her corset and panties. This is a far cry from earlier from when she sat proudly upright in the same car, wearing her fashionable outfit, a well put together woman of cool and aloof dignity. Now disheveled and in in her underpants, she is driven to where her car is and unceremoniously dumped in the parking lot. As Matthau speeds off, she put her hands on her hips spreading her fur coat, revealing a view of herself from head to foot in just her lingerie. In public. A humiliated, frustrated girl in her underwear who was trying to poach a married man. Because after all, that was her crime. Now if that's a bit sexist, well, this was 1967 after all. I make no judgements :) The contrast drawn here is sharp; earlier in the film the Devry character is presented as a wealthy, attractive divorcee'. She's presented as cool, calm, and aloof...calculating even. She shown in her fashionable clothes in command of all situations. Certainly she is more than a match for the fumbling (if still attractive Matthau) whom she sets her sights on as a dalliance. To her, he is just another notch on her lipstick case. She doesn't care about his wife or family or what the consequences might be bring. Not her problem. Her comeuppance-- mussed, discarded, and humiliated in her underwear in public in a parking lot-- is her penalty. Elaine Devry interestingly was married to Mickey Rooney for 6 years in the 50's. She had a long career in film and television, with her last appearance as late as 1999. Remarkably, she is still living, and is currently 92 years old. |
