thanks again!

Is London #1 because we have more beautiful more naked women than all the other WNBR cities, or because we have more perverts with cameras here?

Proud that Brighton is #2, and getting international attention, it is not a major UK city but it is gloriously progressive: gay-friendly, green-friendly (first ever Green Party MP elected), nudity-friendly (official nude beach), youthful demographic, a leading centre in fashion and art. So it is a perfect fit for the WNBR. It helps that it's easy to get to from London.

From what I know of Portland, it has a very similar vibe.

London has much to be proud of. So does Mexico City. The huge cities/metro areas don't typically put out major rides. Most folks are too busy going about their day, and a more business climate rules. So for London to put a thousand on the streets in daylight is something hardly any other big city has done except Chicago (at night) perhaps and Mexico City, which put 2000 on the streets this year. I'm really excited about what they did down in Mexico, BTW.

New York and LA don't come close to London. Phily has a strong turnout. All other european major cities rank well behind London. Why can't sophisticated Paris put out a big ride? Amsterdam? Berlin? Moscow?

The thousand rider club is an exclusive club! London (I don't really know the numbers this year) and Mexico City rule the world for daylight rides. Brighton, considering the size of the town, is exceptional to be able to put 700 on the streets. Spain used to put lots of riders out but i don't see many pics this year. Over in the US, Phily and New Orleans probably top the country for daylight rides, with rides in the 300-700 range. LA's last year was not too shabby. San FRancisco, a city that everyone would expect would put hundreds in the streets, for some reason does not make a big show of this. I will never know why. And Seattle does not put more than a few hardy regulars out each year. No big show either. It always surprises me how cities can vary so much when it comes to WNBR rides.

In the US, Phily, Chicago and Portland put out YOUTH rides, but only Phily's is really a daylight ride. They are the only US cities to really do this. Brighton seems to be another city that really puts out the youth, and London does a good job too. Why this is so I could give to a psychologist to study. But for DAYLIGHT YOUTH rides, we only really have Phily and Brighton, although I've never attended the London ride so I don't really know if it would qualify as a YOUTH ride (you do you define these things?).

But to have London, Brighton and Portland lead this thread in pics makes total sense to me right now. I do feel we need to get a few more pics from Chicago up, because in the past, Chicago pics always outnumbered Portland pics. The rest of the rides aren't going to attract a lot of serious photogs because of their size. I am a pretty serious photog myself and I am bored now by smaller rides. Portland's daylight ride, with over a hundred riders, bores me to death now :) I've gotten really spoiled and jaded....:)

I don't know the ride numbers from the Portland night ride this year, but again, they lead the world by a large margin. 8000 to 10,000 probably rode again this year. I'd like for people to see better what goes on AFTER the Portland ride, because few pics go up each year showing the after parties that probably really help swell the numbers every year. I think a lot of kids ride just so they can boogie after..

continuing on with a previous post - If anyone wants to get a better understanding of why Portland puts out so many more riders than other cities, try googling "Pedalpalooza" I quote:

"Pedalpalooza is 3+ weeks of bikey fun. With 280 different events (i.e rides), most organized by individuals, bikers of all persuasions are likely to find many events of interest. Nearly all events are free."

Portland is insanely devoted to bike culture, and Pedalpalooza, which is going on right now, is the focal point each year for all this craziness. During june, there are up to a dozen rides a day. You can't help but get caught up in it. So really, theres your answer -

OK, since at this point, I don't see a lot of pics up from lesser rides, here are some screen grabs showing my WNBR folders, listed by town/city. All of these cities have the potential to have pics for this year. Just google: "(City name)", WNBR etc or something. my Screen grabs don't include the following cities (which I had filed separate because at the time they were "major" rides to me):

Victoria, BC
Vancouver, BC
Seattle
Chicago
Portland
London
Brighton
Madrid
San Francisco

these nine rides above have historically produced a lot of pics even if the ride per se was not that big. Today, I don't see much from Victoria, Vancouver or Madrid. Also, don't google Phily since their ride is not until late summer, and Seattles ride(s) are now spread out in the July-Aug period. Too much competition from Fremont, I guess :)

Anyway, but the screen grabs below show you all the other lesser known rides and locations and conceivably any could produce a great pic or two. Mexico City, which is listed below is now a major ride. Burlington VT usually puts out good pics. And then of course, go to the WNBR wiki site which also has similar lists.

Do you know the date of Victoria's WNBR? Vancouver's will take place this Saturday.

you can check the wiki WNBR site - they would have the date. But I was under the impression that it has already taken place, and that we might even have a few pics up from it already.

Also, I was going to expand on the "serious photographer" phenomena, and how it seems to be affecting what is going up in this thread this year. The "serious photographer" phenomena applies to WNBR big time because most of the rides tend to be held on the same day. This phenomena states basically that the lesser rides will fall into the backwater pic-wise as the major rides suck up the more discerning, talented, and mobile photographers. This seems to have happened this year especially. I did not attend the Eugene, OR ride for example this year although I would have liked to because I was in Portland. Etc, etc...

So, now although I have been honoring the UK snappers in previous posts, deservingly so - I now want to see pics from the lesser rides!! heh, heh.....

The publicity aspect of the WNBR is fascinating. They hold them all on the same day more or less, but over the years, snappers gravitate more and more to the major rides. It would be interesting to compare the distribution of pics by city going up in threads here from 2006, for example and 2013. There have been big changes. Conrad Schmitt would like every ride to get at least SOME publicity. Maybe you have to go to local news websites to find stuff as locally at any rate, lesser rides can still be big news. But at OCC now, which is today a relative fat cat, are we passing over the lesser rides because we've gotten too discerning?
