I went to Formentera for a few days, spent most of my time on Espalmador.

i'm pretty sure about one thing...voyeurism are helping to do this. i'm naturist, some of my girl friends dont want go to nude beach anymore, they have afraid to be photographed by some voyeur. Small cameras with HD quality are become a very serious issue to FKK public places. FACT!

I think some of the reason for this decline in numbers you're seeing is due to the women's knowledge of the omnipresence of cell phone cameras. They're more shy because they know that, unlike with an open display of a camera, they can't fault men for having cell phones.

Actually, if public saunas are becoming more popular, then all is not lost. Women might be shyer about beach nudity, but if they're liking sauna nudity, then they've not completely closed their minds to public nudity.

Fan, do you have any insights or comments from women as to why saunas are becoming more popular among them?

I came home from a trip to Formentera on sunday, and can confirm the reduced number of naturist. I spent most my time on Migjorn, and there were few naturists. On Es Truncadors I saw almost no one, and only one guy at the beach by Es Calo.

Avarua; did you travel in early June? I've heard that the number of naturists decline radically when all the Italian youth comes in late June. But still.. To bad that the former naturist paradise is spoiled by textilists.

Its is true that the Italians ruin Formentera in the high season with their refusal to go naked, thus diluting the effect and putting off others who like 'safety in numbers' before they go naked.

I have not been to Formentera for a few years, but April, May and early June have always been good for nudes in my experience, so probably September is equally so.

Interesting thread. Let me tell you about the experience my wife and I had at Baker Beach in San Francisco, well known worldwide as a "nude beach." We had seen this trend growing, but it's reached the tipping point:

It was a pleasant afternoon, about 75F/25C with a slight breeze. When we got to the north (nude) end, we saw about 150 people, and of those maybe 30 or 40 were nude (all men) and the rest in swimwear or beachwear. None of the women were even topless, unless you want to count one or two who were lying face down with their bikini tops unhooked. The nude men were mostly by themselves or with other men (likely gay), and I noticed 3 or 4 couples like us where the man was nude and the woman was not. Like you say, a "sausage fest."

Maybe some day beach nudity will be considered a "guy thing" like it was generations ago?

Is there anyone that has some pictures of Formentera's beaches taken in july-august 2011? I am interested because some friends of mine(aged 18-21) went there and they most likely went topless(not nude, though, i am sure). There one thousand photos on their facebook accounts that show them on those splendid beaches, fully clothed though.

Me and the partner are off to Mallorca this Friday. We'll be visiting Es Trenc again, last year we always managed to find ourselves in amongst all male/gay groups. Or they found us being as we were amongst the first on the beach every day. Been to Es Trenc the last 3 years and never felt uncomfortable with voyeurs, although it is hard to get a few shots off ;-). Unlike Croatia were the ities turn up en mass in July & August and lech &
Lear and refuse to strip.

They maka da bigga mistaka. They should try it somatime!

I went there the second half of june, the same period 3 yrs in a row, so I think I may say we have a trend.

For such a passionate and volatile race they are surprisingly hung up sexually.
