FLANKER7 - thanks for the additional pics. It's been a long time since I NEEDED more pictures of someone I saw online. Name your favorite type of image and I'll start hunting to pay you back, and I'll start a new theme named after you.

The fifth annual Chicago World Naked Bike Ride on Saturday June 14th 2008 was an overwhelming success, with an official participant count of 1700!

This count was calculated using a stationary elevated video record of the entire mass from head to toe passing a fixed point early in the ride, counted using slow-motion, repeated four times and averaged. The video was taken at the North East corner of Washington and Racine as mass left a traffic signal, using a crosswalk line as count point. Point was about 1.5 miles into ride from gathering area, about .5 miles from Union Park check-in point. Mass there averaged a dozen deep, passing about ten a second. Margin of error could be high, but certainly over 100 more joined the ride well after the count (many intentionally merging at the half-way viewing point) making 1700 a safe figure.

Others may review the count using the reference video on our photos page. Several preliminary photo albums, route map, and more are also there.

It would be hard to argue with anyone from Chicago that their ride wasn't the biggest. After all, they have DOCUMENTATION! Portland only has guestimates.

Exact numbers are hard to come by. That is - unless you rode in Asheville, NC this year. The count? Four men in their skivies. I think I'll pass.

So, but one positive consequence of having all these rides in different cities, though, is the inevitable competition to have the biggest and best one. I have to admit, Chicago really goes all out, and 1700 riders is impressive. But if the ride had been held in the daytime, would they have been able to match London? And what about Portland's estimated 2500 riders? Reliable, or.........what?

Competition should bring out even more riders. Lets have a worldwide "WNBR bike off" next month between Portland, London and Chicago, internationally broadcast on NBC.

And the winner is..........PORTLAND......by a.......er.........nipple...!!??

Thanks for the offer... no tribute necessary, just keep posting! I included one more I'd skipped over. It's from a long way away, but I believe she hasn't covered her bush in paint yet in this one, so I figured it's worth sending your way as well. Unfortunately, as we've already documented in this thread, there are photos that can't be enlarged even using pseudo-hacks. Maybe one day someone will figure this one out too.

P2003 06-17-2008 08:57 PM

YES! Thanks again. I am actually sitting here refreshing the page. I normally check back daily, only. I am transfixed.

I need a larger version of that picture. I tried a number of hacks, including the bookmark one but I was told "This Photo Is Currently Unavailable".

Some mixed pics. I think the main galleries for all these photos have already been linked, so most of you have seen them before, but I'm going to throw my favorites on here as well in case anyone missed them.

No trip to London would be complete without a visit to Big Ben. When scheduling your next trip, consider early June. Like say.......June 14th?

Then, continue your history lesson with the help of this handy guide to environmental action. Oh - did I mention that reading it in the nude is compulsory?

London again. Some of these look like Fremont paint jobs. Pedro, I wonder if there is a trend towards more full body paint jobs at WNBR in London. Maybe one way to hide more while still baring it all? Or might there be Fremont influence?

The girl in pink strikes me as.....oh, so British! :D What a lovely......:)

I think you hit the target dead on. The combination of group peer approval and full body paint provides choices about the degree of participation. Appearing in public in a full body paint job would seem to be a way to get the reluctant folks out of the bleachers and onto the playing field. I'm thinking that their perception is different than just being plain old buck naked. At least, that is how I might see it.

Thanks crispus, I thought about trawling through the crowd shots, but have not had the time! I see this year she kept her panties on :(, at least at that stage of the ride! Last year they came off mid ride :D.

A load of Chicago bodypainting shots went up at coccozella this morning, here are the ones with (MORE or less) bush in!

Question....Are all Chicago girls so hairy as the ones in all the shots we seen posted this week, almost all the young ones have underarm hair and a line of hair extending upwards to the navel, in many shots. I guess (as in Brighton) quite a few girls may well be gay, or is it a 'hippy' thing?

Stevin: Did it help to leave the filename only because you can then compare with your own pictures' filenames, or have you found a way to search Flickr by them? Crispus

If i want to download and save the pic in the proper folder, i get immediately the message if a pic with that picnumber already exist in the folder and if i want to replace that pic by this one. So then i now immediately if i already have the pic, also i could look in the folder if i have the original or big size pic instead of big size pic or medium size pic. So i compare them only based on pictures' filenames.
I don't think there is a way to search Flickr by them as the filenames, numbers are too complex.

It came as quite a surprise to me. This looked to be a bunch of musicians (notice the drums, trumpet, notes painted on) and the extra fur was probably confined to them. They surely knew each other, took lots of photos, and skewed the overall "look" of the ride. But call them a clique of pagan worshipping musicians or something...

Did a little research. I believe they're called Environmental Encroachment. The name pretty much implies all the above.

As far as bush goes, I don't think it's just Chicago. I've noticed that a disproportionate number of the women in the WNBR world-wide go for the less manicured look. This makes sense. Women that are inclined to participate in subversive political gestures like the WNBR are likely to ignore the conventional images of beauty present in mainstream culture. In addition to the specific goal of calling attention to oil over-consumption, the broader agenda of the WNBR involves rejecting most of the values that the mainstream holds dear (wealth, materialism, consumerism, mass consumption and... modesty), so it's not at all surprising that the females of the ride "just say no" to the ideals of femininity as sold to us on MTV, Us Weekly etc. Same reason you don't see too many tanned and buff gym-built guys. Showing off the full-bush is a counter-culture statement.

I agree with them politically. But me, I prefer a nice landing strip.

I overheard a conversation at the body painting at Brighton on this subject, a girl with a full bush said to her mate (who was painting her, I think they may have been gay from other remarks that were made!), that she had not done anything about trimming it for a while as she knew she was going on the ride and it made her feel a bit less exposed!

Hadn't thought about that. Makes sense I suppose.

I hereby stake my claim for another first, the Cardiff (Wales) ride of 2008, the first time there has been a ride and it looks a bit tame. Still a tame ride is better than no ride at all!

We still have Edinburgh (Scotland), which I think is at the end of the month, to come. Then it will be the time to see what the scots really wear under their kilts!!!

The Portland ones are OK (ish), the London ones are stolen Flikr shots from the 2007 ride!

I found these comments on Flikr which goes some way to showing the shortage of ladies pics from London this year....

I've been shooting WNBR since I first heard about it back in 2006. I followed the Photo policy every year and have not taken one photograph without permission (quick chat, eye contact, etc.) . Hell, I even sent HQ copies to three of the riders via eMail because they requested me to do so. All in all, it was fun, even for me with my pants on!!!

With the same image in mind, I showed up in Hyde Park today for another shoot. Guess what I saw... Riders in the middle, photographers barred behind the tape and desperately circling around for an opportunity. While many, as usual, were having fun with their mobile phones and not caring the least bit about the rules, those who did care, like myself, were having a hard time trying to take a decent photo.

Forgive my ignorance, but how the hell am I supposed to take photos "with permission" if the person is standing meters away and I have no way to get close and talk to them in person?

Rules are there to avoid problems. Staff are there to enforce the rules. But the tapes... and the unnecessary paranoia from some of the staff (e.g. the dude with his ridiculous "this photograph was taken without permission" sign) ruined the whole damn thing for me today: The fun, the free spirit, and the not so difficult to follow policy. I shot only nine photographs. All will be emailed to the friendly people who allowed me to shoot. None will be public this year. Because I am very [bleeep]in' pissed off!

See you next year.

Maybe!
